YFA Rebuild. Throttle shaft bent and worn - Now what?

I was recently gifted an 82 F-150 with a 300 six with a YFA carb from my uncle. It was originally purchased new by my dad so there is emotional attachment to this old, nearly worn out thing.

I went to tear down the YFA over the weekend and found that the throttle shaft is lose in the throttle body. The shaft is also worn down and is BENT!

I think then that the shaft is junk. I could install bushings in the body but would still need to find a shaft somehow and get a piloted reamer.

I have sourced a throttle body assembly (supposedly in good condition) from an internet store. They want $50.

I could try salvage yards but they might be worse than what I have.

What would you (should I) do?

Thanks.

Here it is

I have purchased 2 rebuilt carburetors [2 different trucks] from Rockauto. They were rebuilt by a Canadian company [Autoline] and I have been quite pleased.

Before I spent $50 for a used throttle body, I would consider one of the off-shore YFA clones. New Ford Carburetor YF Type Carter 250-300 Engines 6 Cylinder 1975-82 Vacuum | eBay

Thanks for the response.

Something else to consider: I already have the kit for the rest of the rebuild. It's not opened but I got it online and is difficult or impossible to return.

If you are absolutely married to that original carb, get the body bushed and get a rebuilt carb as a source for the shaft (and other spare parts.) If not just get a rebuilt carb and swap it on - who knows if at some point in the past your Dad didn't already do that anyway??

I have several yfa's of varying condition sitting on a shelf in my shop. I'll probably never use them all. You cover the shipping, i'll pitch one to you. Shoot me a PM.

The one YFA that I know of in a yard around here has a throttle shaft that's just as sloppy as mine but shaft is straight.

The reconditioned throttle plate I found online is out of stock.

Thus far my best repair option is to buy a 50 dollar parts carb + $40 for bushings/ reamer.

Depends what TheDudeAbides might have for me...

Are the chinese jobbies any good?

TheDudeAbides has graciously offered me a carburetor. There are a few differences between it and mine that I would like all of you (including TheDudeAbides) to please (!) help me out and let me know if you think there will be an issue.

The throttle shaft on the TDA's carb is shorter. Mine has the extra bit for the air conditioner (which will never be used again).

The big port that has a vacuum line to the charcoal canister is not on on TDA's carb.

I note the choke housings are different.

They seem the same other than the short throttle shaft issues and the charcoal canister port.

Thoughts?

Rebuild the one that TheDudeAbides so graciously gave you and put it on. The bowl vent to the charcoal canister was on later models. Without it, the carburetor vents internally. On my 1986 with 4.9L, I am using a Carter YF from a 1970 F350. It works quite well.

I just remembered, some of the older carburetors had the two hold-down studs a little [1/4"?] closer to each other. Some carburetors have slots to fit both stud spacings... if yours does not, a small rat-tail file can quickly make the adjustment. Use a new carburetor base gasket as the template for where to remove the material. It took about 15 minutes to do mine.

Thanks for the heads up. Sounds simple enough.

How do you adjust these carbs? I have a rough running condition at idle. seems to run rich also. Its been sitting 3 years and may have to rebuild it, but would like to try adjusting 1st.
