Question Oil Level / Dipstick Readings

Long story short, I recently changed my 2015 2.7s engine oil. Upon time to put new oil in, I initially put 5 quarts in, closed it all up and let it set for 2+ hours , checked it, oil barely registered on the dipstick. I then added .5 quarts more. Let it set overnight. Now the dipstick is consistently reading over the "full" hashes with oil clearly on the twisted section of the stick. Not sure what to make of it, false readings? I'm I way off? I'm I probably ok to carry on with how it is?

Thanks for any help guys,

MG

Your owners manual tells you what the capacity of your engine is.

How long did you let the old oil drain? If you opened the plug right after you turned the engine off, for "safety" you should wait a good 30 minutes to let all the oil make it down to the pan (the various videos out there will mention that).

If you're showing overfilled with only 5.5 quarts, my guess would be that not all the old oil made it out before you put the plug back in.

Given this idiosyncrasy of the 2.7L, on my recent first oil change, I just pulled the plug then did other stuff for around 45 minutes (heck, it took me 20 minutes to put that little o-ring on the oil filter ) then just put the six quarts in and called it good.

I did virtually the same process you stated. Waited about a full hour while it drained (I have the same fun with the o-rings too). But that why I'm frustrated, did the proper steps and still showing "too" full.
