Tranny help - options for my 99 Ranger?
I have a 99 Ranger 3.0L automatic, ext cab, 2 wheel drive. Door sticker show code "T" which I looked up as the 4R44E. The trans seems to be slipping in 1st and 2nd. Thought it was "reared shudder", from a "limited slip" differential but mine is not limited slip. just the regular 8.8 with 373 gears.
Wanting to know what if any options I have for buying a new / rebuilt tranny?
Ive seen where depending upon the year and motor, Ranger can have 4r44e, 4r55e, 5r55e, etc.
TIA

Use your ELM scan tool, running FORScan, or the like software on the viewing device of your choice & have it scan the tranny controller for trouble code clues & post up All code Numbers found.
Check the TRS wiring, electrical connections & mechanical links between the shifter & TRS, to make sure all is well.
Double check the tranny fluid condition & level as called out in the owner manual.
Check line pressure when tranny fluid level & condition are confirmed.
If no codes & it's past time for a tranny fluid & filter change, try that before throwing a tranny at the problem.
Some thoughts that come to mind, let us know what you find.

Thanks for the ideas. I do not have an ELMscan tool only one that reads engine and abs codes. I will get it up on jacks and look over all the connections etc... also maybe a filter fluid change. I know the fluid level is good. I might have to take it to a tranny shop for the codes, pressures, etc..
I would still appreciate any info on what tranny , other than the 4r44e, will fit the Ranger. Thanks

Your model tranny has had problems with blown out valve body gaskets. If you open the pan for a filter change, look carefully all around the edge of the valve body for bits of gasket sticking out. Pay particular attention to the area just above the solenoids and the area around the round reverse servo at the rear. Ford issued a TSB for this problem. The solution was to put in a separator plate with both gaskets glued to the plate. I don't know if your symptoms are the same as those in the TSB, but I would guess the symptoms would vary depending on where the gasket failed.
