Question M5OD/R2 dimensions?

wondering how big/long this tranny is, esp. compared to the E4OD?
since one is a manual and the other an auto, can't seem to find comparisons.

thanks in advance.

M5OD is much smaller than an E4OD.

Smaller than a ZF, but the same length:

I found a reference to 28" long, but can't find anything official.

Are you trying to work up a swap?

acquired a 351 / E4OD to put in a '52 F3... but this tranny is huuuge for this old truck, so wondering about changing plans and going with a 5 speed for a better fit. haven't seen a M5 in person, but just assumed it would be smaller...

While you can make the M5OD bolt up, it was never used for 351Ws and was used in F/E150s only. It will hold up to modest use in your case, but if you are going to work the truck (which would bring up the "Really?" series of questions) or drag race it (which would bring up the "Really!?") series of questions, then you may be better served with another choice.

hmmm, i found sources online that say it was used in the '88-'92 F250 4x2 behind the 5.8... if that's true, i can't imagine i'd be any "harder" on it than that application.

Interesting. Based on what I see here, I thought the 250s got the ZF. In any event, you will probably be fine with it.

It was used in F150's with the 300 six and the 5.0. It was in a few F250's with 5.8 but not many. It gets some bad mouthing on the net but seriously some F150's with this tranny went a ton of miles and took a lot of abuse. Older ones could leak from some rubber plugs and run low on oil and the shifter itself had some plastic bushings that wear and cause slop but if maintained they were good to go. Not for racing, not for heavy duty towing.

My rebuilt M5OD-R2 2wd tranny arrived this morning:

With my measuring tape and eyeball so give or take 1/8":
31 1/4" overall bell to tip of output shaft
13 1/4" bell to center of shifter

I'm in the process of acquiring parts to put one in my 68 short box with mild 351W and plan to document it this fall.

good luck... i'll be interested to see your progress (for future reference). i ended up going with an E40D from a Lightning. in fact, will be cutting up floor this week or next to fit around that beast.
