F250 SD 4X4 Front Caliper Question

My brother-in-law has a '99 F250 SD 4X4 7.3 which my sister uses to pull her hobby, I mean, horses around with. Truck has 168,000 original miles on it. He took it to the shop for front brakes, new pads, turn rotors, etc.; shop told him he needed new calipers - again. Sounds like BS to me, but I thought I'd ask. Less than 60,000 miles since the calipers were replaced, and he does not know why they were replaced to begin with. My '01 F250 CC 7.3, with 340,000 miles, has never had the calipers replaced.

Is this a normal thing that I am unaware of? Caliper replacement?

If the pads were worn to the point of metal on metal contact, the caliper boots may have been damaged due to excessive heat.

A lot of variability there, depending on usage, weather, etc. Up here in salt country I know a couple people who replace calipers whenever the pads and rotor are changed. I'm not that bad, but I can say having caliper(s) that need replacement wouldn't even raise an eyebrow around here.

Have to agree with NewEnglandHerdsman, mine's a 2005 but replacing calipers is not that uncommon. I am no expert but apparently the design of the calipers leaves a lot to be desired and there are many issues with them as far as their longevity. Not a tough job to replace if you are so inclined to do it yourself, once you do one the others go pretty easy.
