New project truck possibility

EDIT: new truck listed

Hi all, I'm on the hunt for my next bump. FOund this one today but it's 4.5 hours from my house. If I make that drive I would need to buy it. Asked the guy for more pics. Inside, outside, engine bay and cab mounts. Would you drive almost 5 hours through the mountains for this?

Nice tailgate emblem. Grill from a 69 or earlier. Wish I could find these type of deals in the north east.

I've never seen a Ranger without a cargo light (perhaps the cab had been replaced at one time (?). $1,500.00 dollars isn't a lot of money if the body is in pretty good shape overall.

My 71 F100 Ranger has no cargo light.

Is there a place to check numbers to see if they match? Not sure how long this guy has owned it and may not have the history. But like you said, if it's in nice shape, what does it matter.

You would have to compare the VIN on the door tag compared to what's on the right front frame rail.

The VIN is stamped on the Warranty Plate, riveted to the left door face below the latch. Printed on the Certification Label, glued to the B pillar below the striker plate.

But compare these VIN's with the hidden frame VIN to see if they match.

The 4V manifold isn't original and on sale day, 360's magically become 390's!

The cargo lamp was an option, the body, lens and bezel are the same as 1964/65 Thunderbird backup lamps.

The grille, as previously mentioned, isn't original, appears to be from a 1967.

Neither one of my Rangers have a Cargo Light. I'm going to have to cut the hole to put my spare in.

Looks like a woodgrain XLT horn pad. Curious if the red interior was added like the 67 grille at one time. Not that I have a problem with that. If that's a 4V, it's gotta be an old Autolite Model 4100.

The 4100 is my all-time favorite carb. I found a rebuildable one at a swap meet with a 1.12 in the clock face. Meaning, it's a 600 cfm unit... A 1.08 would be a 480 cfm unit.

Serendipity.

It don't look to bad, but i don't think it's a Ranger, if it matters. It don't have any of the Ranger dash trim.

Unless, you have to have an all original truck, it looks good for $1500. But if you're needing a daily driver in Colorado, wouldn't you want a 4WD truck?

Can't say I'm too concerned with that. In fact I am in the process of selling an all original 70 ranger xlt. The only thing I was looking for was a manual, and this isn't it, but could be a good candidate for a manual swap. Especially since the steering column needs to be replaced anyway. I may go check it out tomorrow. Didn't work out to see it today.

Yeah, 4WD is good to have in CO - about 4 days out of the year haha. I have a 4runner and old suburban for that. This won't be a daily so 2WD is just fine for my purposes. If I come across a nice 4WD truck I won't not buy it, but it's not a must have.

I believe you've mixed up Ranger XLT's with the other trucks.
Tailgate panel is correct for 1970/72 Ranger, Ranger XLT's have essentially the same panel, but it's wood grained.

1970/72 Ranger/Ranger XLT have 3 5/8" wide upper side mouldings. Rangers have black painted inserts, XLT's have walnut wood grained (decal) inserts.

1971/72 Ranger XLT's have a walnut wood grained finish horn pad, all others have a black camera case finished horn pad.

I seem to recall that 1970/72 Ranger XLT's also have misc dash parts that are wood grained, XLT's also have unique door trim panels.

Seems bizarre someone would order a Ranger with a cargo light but not something more useful like power steering, power brakes or A/C --as in the case of my '69 Ranger. My truck has the cargo light but (originally) none of these other things.

These are the hole dimensions for the cargo light.

The centerline location of the screw holes are 1-1/2" down from the seam on the back of the cab and 25-3/4" from the far side of the spot weld on the edge of the cab seam, as located by the green pieces of tape on the back of my truck's cab.

.....and whether you're installing a cargo light or already have one, it can also double as a high-mount 3rd brake light to help reduce the chances of some inattentive person from running up your tail pipe.
