Awful Grinding Noise

I'm still doing my test runs after my engine swap, and I've only driven about 10 miles or so since the swap. When I was driving, the truck started making an awful grinding noise. At first I thought the starter was engaging but when I checked, it was not engaged. After doing some research I am thinking it is the TC gone bad. Can anyone confirm this? I'll put up a video tomorrow so you all can hear what I can. A little background: the trans was fully rebuilt to factory specs 3 years ago. TC only has 25-30 thousand miles on it but I have not gone easy on the truck. Plowing and ******* it isnt great for it, I know, but shouldn't the TC last a bit longer than 30k miles? I also did a full trans flush at 17k miles. TIA

So it looks like I won't be posting that video for a few days. My CPS went out after only being in the truck 2 days. Can anyone help with what they think is happening without the video? I think it is the TC but i want some confirmation before I go buy a new one.

I experienced a grinding issue when the starter wasn't retracting all the way. It would do it when I would accelerate or on first start up. I replaced the starter and all was good.

i was thinking the same thing but I checked and it wasn't engaged at all. It's also a brand new starter. And as for the flex plate, when I had the engine out I checked it and didn't see any cracks. I may take the belt off and see what happens. Gotta wait for the cps to come in first.

Very true, that CPS is a good indicator. But I did climb under the truck while it was running and saw the the starter was fully disengaged.

I had taken the inspection plate off and thought the same thing since it wasn't hitting the flex plate. But when it was running, revving the would pull the bendix out. I had someone rev it while underneath the truck and could see it pulling out and hitting the flex plate.

That's the thing. It was making the noise the loudest at idle and that's when I checked and the starter was not engaged. The noise goes away around 1500 rpm.

I just had my transmission rebuilt. I thought I had a broken flex plate making noise. For me it was the TC that was busted, the flex plate wasn't broke. Below is the link to a video I did which was a bad TC. The noise the starter made was like grinding metal on metal.

It had always done that since I bought the truck. I said something about the noise to the guy I bought it from and he didn't know. He had flushed the trans some years back but didn't know how many miles the trans had. I bought it with 215,000. Long story short I was ok replacing the trans if needed.

Everyone's opinion was a broken flex plate due the movement it had while running. I had also explained the wobble was worse last winter when I replaced the starter. Therefore the conclusion was a broken flex plate. Hard thing is that you couldn't see a crack and the trans had to be pulled to see where it bolts to the crank to determine if it is broken there.

However, the TC would also stop making noise when it would lock up which I couldn't understand why if it was the flex plate. Anyway, new rebuilt trans and TC and no more noise.

That's what I'd do first. Doesn't cost anything and easy enough to rule out anything belt driven causing the noise. Noise sources can be deceptive and have fooled me more than once.

Got her started! new CPS from the stealership (cheaper than riffraff though) and a battery charge and she started right up. Heres a link to the video I made. Sounds pretty rough.
