302 swap on a 223.

How's it going guys! It's been awhile since my last post. But now I'm thinking of swapping out my 223 i6 for the 302 into my 1964 F100. I've read on other threads about the swap being economical in labor and parts to other engines. I just have a question for the wise and more knowledgeable members on here. I'm wondering what tranny would be best to pair with the 302? I have a three on the tree, and if possible I'd love to keep it.

Look at how your engine is mounted, no 302 mounts this way.

You cannot use the motor mounts/brackets, bell housing and etc. used on 1961/64's with a 302, so aftermarket engine mounts have to be used.

302 introduced in Spring 1968 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars, in 1969 F100, Bronco & Econoline.

Your current three speed transmission will not mount to Small Block ford bell housing.

You will need a entire new bell and transmission to work.

You will also need to add a transmission cross member to support the transmission along with Aftermarket engine mounts.

Okay well I had in mind already of buying mounts for the engine And new transmission. But I want to know if there's anyway to use the three on the tree with the new transmission for the 302. If it's not a possibility is there any other way to avoid from dropping the shifter to the floor?

The three on the tree can be reused with modifications to the linkage rods. It will be a bit of trial and error to keep them form binding.

I would use the Ford 3.03 3 speed. And it's fully syncroed.

Automatic use a C4 or AOD

I personally would add a Tremec TKO 500 if you want to keep it manual

If you want a three speed you need a Three speed from 65 and any F series up to the last three on the tree in 1986.

Hey guys I found a 302 Windsor here in my area. But no tranny yet. I did run across a T-5 tranny decided I'd go with a manual and drop the shifter to the floor. What do you guys think about the 302 with a T-5 behind it?

A T5 came behind many 302s in Mustangs, so it should work great.

Hey guys might be a common question on here. But as I switch the shifter to the floor would it be possible to only eliminate the shifter on the steering column to avoid removing and replacing it?

I don't understand the question, but you can remove or leave in place as much of the original shift linkage as you want since it is no longer needed.

Sorry I just read the question and realized it's a little confusing. Yeah I was simply asking if I can keep the original steering column that had three on the tree(but that would become obsolete), even after I change the shifter to floor since I'm putting in the T5.
