1989 f450 welding rig build/ need help
Hi i am joey. I am new here and I recently picked up a 1989 ford f450 with 460 bbf and 5 speed trans code is t18. It is a reg cab 2wd dually. That is going to be mad into my weldingrig. I am having problems with the truck running the sutting down has new fuel pump in tank (hole sending unit) and new one on frame rail HP pump. its been sitting for over a yr because of this. put a battery in it and it cranks fuel pumps humming . Then turn key off then on no power to pump on rail. harrness has been hacked up and repaird a few time and a friend thats a mechanic and ford boy says also the ecu could be part of the problem. i am debating on swaping it to carb or try to figure this out. any body have any info thank you im lil lost on gas motors on the electronic end. Iam 25 and a welder and heavy equipment mechanic.

Take a picture of the label and post it up.
Take some close-ups of the board inside.
The three Caps are often light blue.
One of us can tell you what you need.

[QUOTE=arse_sidewards;16674560]This. There's a fuel pump test wire in the diagnostic harness that will run the pumps if grounded. Make sure that's not happening before you get a new computer.[/QUO

The best diagrams and diagnostic walkthrough's come from the factory Electrical and Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual (EVTM)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-Bronco-...1USA79&vxp=mtr
You can find the right year on Ebay for about $20, or you can often buy one from Helm directly, but new they are some $$$.
Be *SURE* you get the *EXACT* right computer, with the *SAME* catch code as the one you remove.
(I can't stress this enough)

Brad's right. You have a ZF 5 speed, not a T18 4 speed. Shifter is a dead give away. Last year these trucks came with a factory 4 speed was 1987.
The speed density EFI that your truck uses is super simple and easy to diagnose and repair. It's also much more reliable in cold weather. Fix that, don't go carb'd.
If you need a book with some diagrams, go ahead and get yourself a Chilton manual. Not a total coverage of every system in the truck, but good enough to get you on the right track most times.
