M5od-r2 2wd to 4wd
Hi everyone I'm new to the site and have a few questions on my 1992 f150 4X4 5 speed manual (m5od-r2). I've been having troubles with the transmission recently changed fluid and had to put in a new slave cylinder. Problem is is my syncronizers are bad and the transmission is just beat up (2 owners before me wanted a mud truck and swapped the 5 speed in was a e4od from factory). I have found someone who has a 2wd version of the m5od-r2. How hard will it be to change that trans to 4wd? I have gone though other posts and tried to find The answer and can't find a straightforward answer on this. I understand it would be easier to buy a complete 4X4 trans and replace mine but funds are very low for me at the moment. So my question is how hard will it be? Will I need a tail shaft or will my transfer case from my transmission bolt up to a 2wd? My transmission is going bad and need to find which direction I'm going to go with. Thanks guys.

Welcome to FTE.
I'm pretty sure it will require a complete teardown, as your trans loads from the front iirc. New shaft and housing, and put it back together.
IMO it would be easier to rebuild your trans. Either way, it has to come apart. So, you would have a box you know fits, all the parts that play together well, etc. You replace synchros, bearings and shift forks and away you go. (plus a few other little parts)
