So I blew a head gasket
#2
I can't give specific Y block tips, but any time you blow a head gasket you need to have the head resurfaced. While it's at the machine shop have the valve guides checked for wear. You may also want to do a valve job while it's off. I would also consider doing both sides. Whatever caused one side to fail could eventually cause the other side to fail.

It's pretty much the same procedure as any other engine. If you are generally familiar with that, then you don't absolutely need a manual. I still advise that you get one so that you will have answers to many questions right in your hands.
If you aren't familiar with that general procedure, then you need a manual.
As mentioned, watch out for the bolts. There will be either 2 or 3 lengths. Your truck is 52 years old so we will not assume that it is correct and prepare you for both. Earlier Ys only had 2 lengths and should be quite obvious where they go. Later ones had 3 lengths, 5 short, 3 long and 2 which are 1/4" longer. The 2 longest ones go at the very ends of the head, in the holes that have the dowels.
You do need to make an effort to determine why the gasket blew so that you're not doing this job again soon.
