One of the reasons I don't want a diesel, "some telltale soot around the tailpipe on a white test mule truck". Nonetheless it was interesting thanks for posting.

I wouldn't worry about soot around the tailpipe. Test mules by definition are not the final design. Heck, that soot just proves the value of mules.

I tell you what, I couldn't get less excited about a diesel engine. Maybe it's the expected price bump, the power of the new 2nd gen EB motor or just plain apathy from waiting so long (prob a good mix of all three), but it just seems it's "too little, too late".

That XTR badging is nothing new to us Canadian folks. XTR is just the 302A package on the XLT. Really popular, it's the volume seller as far as I know. No idea why it gets its own decals, but it has for a long time.

GM has now marketed the 2.7L Duramax in the Canyon / Colorado twins. Very smart if you ask me. They have the HD trucks for extreme duty, the 1500's for mid level performance and the smaller trucks as the MPG champion.

Amen! My 3.5 EB does everything I need, with the exception of MPG. And I seriously doubt that the diesel will have such stellar economy that it'll warrant buying a new truck just to get the MPG.

Have a feeling it'll be a $4500 up charge over the 3.5 EcoBoost and maybe only available on Lariat and higher trim...or they'll do what Ram does and offer it on all trims. Just hope it'll be more reliable than EcoDiesel.

That big an upcharge would probably be a deal breaker for most. It does not look like it would pencil out to me.

I don't see this fitting my needs personally, but I'm really excited about the option to have it in the lineup. We really are spoiled for choice these days in the half-ton market segment. Amazing capability, amazing fuel economy, and amazing ride comfort are all easily obtainable. Not always in the same truck, but it's up to each buyer to configure what they want.

I couldn't agree more but I'm concerned about which engine will go bye bye to accommodate the oil burner.

Why wouldn't Ford take this opportunity to match Nissan with something like 550 lb-ft? Or, is Ram stealing a lot more market than Nissan so they aren't worried about not being top-dog?

As part of the testing, I'm certain they have different config stages for hp, torque, MPG, etc.

IMHO...it is exciting that FORD is going to offer a diesel in the F150. I am curious what the MPG's are going to be??!!??

IMO 10 - 12 years late, they need to offer it in the lower trim levels with a reasonable up charge and MPG north of 30 or it will be a bust.
