The dpc code has to match. The 4 digit code talks to the strategy/year. That's my understanding. We put a tde1 in for our naw6 and think it runs better too
As far as I know it has to be from the same family. When I went with BTS tunes and talked to Brian about it, I asked if he needed the PCM code. He said nah, it's a 96 so you've got xxxxx or yyyyyy so we will be good. I really don't care too much as my tunes work.

Ok, so the one that went in is an AWL4. I just have to have that info for the chip reburn, correct? And Bryan, I think the TDE1 was the latest for the OBS truxks, correct?
I always have been asked by tuners which one I have. My 96 had the tde1 and the 97 OX had the awl4. My tunes were programed for the tde1 so I put the 97 mare's tde1 in the OX. I don't think its 'year' related.

Yes the dpc 202 is the obs automatic hardware code and the tde1 was/is the latest strategy for that. The dpc-203 is the manual hardware code but off hand I don't know it's latest strategy.
Well guys I am a damn idiot. i have no idea how I came up with AWL4. I looked this morning and Bill determined for me that its a manual PCM. Code is ALF4...sheesh. Now I have something to work with. You guys have been epic helping me on this one. I am happy that it's a manual PCM AND it's a '96.
I'm also a idiot, I just remember it wasn't a TDE1 in the OX, called Aaron and he said it would be OK to put the TDE1 in from the Mare so I could use my tunes. My spare was a TDE1 so when I broke down this past summer it worked with my tunes also.
