Engine/Transmission Swap-Out

I am thinking of removing my 223 and granny fourspeed tranny from my 54 F-100 and installing a 289 or 302. Probably the 302 will be easier to find. My question is, would it be better to go with a Ford Toploader four speed or a T5 five speed? Any comments and suggestions will be welcomed. I have never done this before so it should be educational. Besides, Ray Tasch and I need stuff to do......LOL. Thanks for any input.

Might as well get a trans with an OD ratio while you're at it, the M5 from the 1/2 ton trucks is also a good option for a general driving around vehicle.
