Rumble strip noise HELP!!!!!!
Alright so I go ahead and point out that I'm in the investigation stage of this issue. I'm pretty sure it can be figured out without changing a host of parts.
About 3 months ago, my 2000 F-250 super duty 4x4 started making a noise as best described as driving over a rumble strip. After a day of investigation, I determined that the locking hub on the driver side was grinding the splines on the drive shaft. I removed it and it worked fine. Two days ago it started again. I'm thinking it maybe a bad wheel barring. Couple things to point out
Both hub assembly's removed (still makes noise)
When noise starts (it does it sporadicly typically when you hit a bump) you can slow to a stop, and it goes away. You can drive a few miles before it starts again.
The driver side drive shaft is extremely loose meaning you can move it around and the Universal joint makes clopping noise and moves in every direction freely. Tire rotation one way, shaft rotation other????
Passenger side drive shaft COMPLETELY FROZE to the barring assembly and rotation same direction and speed of the wheel. Can't move drive shaft without rotating wheel also
Gentlemen I do industrial maintenance and have experience so I'm not a dummy when it comes to rotating equipment. On the other hand this is my first 4x4 truck and I'm stumped. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks
Doug

Doug, I would say t is time for a complete overhaul , from the center out , barring differential.
Sounds that you have multiple parts failing, and all are at an age , or miles where they need attention .
Sorry for the bad news , if it were just one side causing you trouble, my suggestion would have applied to that side.
Yes you are looking at spending a lot of cash for parts , but sounds that you are capable , and will save on the labor .
