92-96 5.0 Exhaust Ideas

Hey guys. I was wondering who makes a good muffler that has a rumble for this setup. 93 Ford F150 4x4 regular cab. I do not want it too loud but I like that sport rumble. Not in the cab though. Flowmaster, Magnaflow? What do you guys recommend? Oh and I want a Cowboy Dual. One in and 2 out. Still have factor manifolds and factory Cat convertors.

I have a couple trucks with the 40 series Flowmaster. I put a Cherry Bomb Vortex on my '94 Bronco (302). I liked the Cherry Bomb a little better. Sound is all personal preference. Listen to some sound clips on AlGore's amazing Internet and pick one. I would buy the muffler I want and take it to the exhaust shop to have it installed if they don't carry that brand/model.

As mentioned, just start looking clips up on youtube. Flowmasters are chambered mufflers, and have a distinctive "hollow" sound, while Magnaflows are usually straight-through and have a smoother sound.

The factory converters are well known mufflers, you could probably run a straight pipe off the rear converter and not notice much difference in sound level (dB). Changing the muffler will change the tone, not much else.

With the stock cats in place muffler choice is almost irrelevant because the exhaust will still be too quiet to hear any difference. Once the stock cats are out of the picture then you can pick a muffler, Flowmasters will give you that hollow raspy sound and lots of in-cab droning, Magnaflow will be deep sounding but without the drone and that metalic BLAT that the DroneMasters produce, and a Dynomax SuperTurbo is a little more subdued again but still plenty loud compared to stock.

I do not have any drone in my Flowmaster trucks but I have ridden in some Mustangs that were just awful. My '93 GT was almost unbearable at some RPMs.

I just put in a dogleg sections of pipe where the muffler used to be. And run the factory tailpipe, its is unnoticeable in the cab. But, it sounds decent outside, I'd say "sporty" but not "aggressive" .

I have 2 trucks of the same year. Both have the 302 engine and one has flowmaster on it. It sounds good from a distance but as mentioned it sounds a bit hollow up close. I want that v8 sound that makes sense. I do not want a system that sounds like its not all there.

Magnaflows for the win on a Ford.

my Challenger R/T has Flowmaster 40's...it sounds amazing in and outside the car...but damn if she doesn't drone in 6th gear horrifically

On my '95 with the 5.8, I just cut the muffler and tailpipe off. Put a 90* angle on the end of the cat and it sounds pretty darn good. There is more in cab noise though because the cat ends so close to the cab...but it's free and super easy

That doesn't work if you are still tormented with emissions tests. Doesn't the exhaust come up into the cab if sitting there idling?

Works fine for emissions testing

You can do anything you want to exhaust as long as you don't touch the cats. 100% legal. I'm in CT and we have emissions until the car is 25yrs old

Safety wise, the exhaust should extend past the cab. Which mine does. I also put the 90* on there so it would point gasses at the ground vice the undercarriage

I haven't lived in Maryland for several years but that wouldn't meet their standard. They wouldn't reach under the vehicle to attach the tailpipe tester. A friend of mine still lives in the state and his '83 still has to pass the tail pipe test.

I had a 95 with 302. First I did a magnaflow 14" dumped and it had a little rumble and no drone. Then I had the dual cat removed with a single higher flow cat. Had a decent sound but still wasn't real loud!

If I did it again on that truck I would have just taken the muffler off and ran cats only! They are really restrictive!

I put a pair of aluminized Cherry Bomb Turbo mufflers with 3" pipe on a truck with a 5.8L Windsor a few years ago and it sounded great running manifolds and no cats.
The thing was pretty loud when I got on the gas but very sedate at cruise. We did a true dual system with the pipes running out left and right just behind each rear wheel.
I was replacing a pair of 3 chamber Flowmasters that drove me mad on the highway. The drone would put me to sleep on long rides. Never heard or tried the magnaflows yet.
