2006 6.0 egr headgasket or oil cooler???????? Help?

Hey guys new to the forum. I have an 06 6.0
I was driving the other day looked down and noticed the temp was climbing, by the time I pulled over the it was damn near pegged. So I went around popped the hood and barelyyyyy cracked the Degas bottle cap just barely enough to let breathe, the thing shot off spewing coolant and what looks like oil all over the place. Soooo now I need to know if it's headgasket, or oil cooler or something else. And how do I diagnose to each one to climate it...
I will be uploading a picture of the Degas bottle and the **** in it. Thanks guys

Well let me put it this way

Your oil cooler Burst and mixed inside the oil cooler

Now it may have overheated and warped a head but sounds like you may have caught in time

a Head gasket pukes its coolant but never makes sludge like that you have at minimum classic oil cooler failure or really Breach failure

What's a good company to get an oil cooler from? I'm not wanting to do anything crazy just OEM replace and a gasket set.

I got mine from (Tousleys?) White Bear Lake Ford (Auto Nation) I think Ed at FICUM repair also sells them not sure. Use only a OEM don't go cheap or you will be doing it again soon. On the EGR I welded mine up.

You got ALOT of cleaning to do.

Edit; there is a great video by Diesel Tec Ron (RIP) on replacing cooler on YouTube

Here is a good one from DTR on the oil cooler, pretty straigh forward just takes a little time.
As Tideman said, just get a good OEM from Ford, Autonation (Tousley Ford) or Ed at FICMrepair.com would be about your best bet.
Do not get a DORMAN...........junk gaskets and you will be doing it over. I repeat, do NOT get a DORMAN. They make a fine degas bottle, the oil cooler I would not give a plug nickel for one.
Do a few google searches on how to clean that mess up, gonna take some Dawn dish soap and patience but it can be done and you likely caught this in time.
Maybe do a EGR delete instead of cooler? Just a thought........but if you do the cooler then I think there are options out there besides Ford, although I don't know much about them as I am deleted.

Absolutely get rid of it you will need a tune

If you never worked on one before plan on 2-3 days craps in the heater core radiator slimed in around cylinder walls going to be a lot of flushing

Well I got it all torn apart waiting on cooler to arrive today. I pulled my radiator out along with my hoses and have been running dawn dish soap with hot water and cleaning ALOT!what's the correct procedure for flushing the block/heater core? Where should I hook up to and should I pull the block coolant drain plugs? And when I install the new oil cooler is it going to be bad to flush that crap through the new one?? Thanks guys the diesel tech Ron video is awesome btw!

The new cooler is the absolute last step, all flushing will have been done and water running clear as a mountain stream.......ok not quite but you get the idea.
You do not want to be flushing anything after the cooler is installed, unless you have a fondness for doing things like this twice.
I'm not sure what the best step for flushing the heater core is, seems pretty simple though if you have a hose in and a hose out?
You will need to pull the block plugs, not really hard to get at, the starter side takes a little more doing though.

Here is a good one from DTR

Here is one for a blown cooler, it's a 7.3 but same principle.

if oil cooler busted it will keep adding oil to coolant so flushing before might be wasted time, after you get new cooler in flush dawn detergent, youll have to get operating temps,, about half a bottle per flush, drive drain, make sure heater on,it may take a week, drive, drain, dawn, repeat. That junk will do harm if not cleaned out on hoses.
