Autos suck. In town the slushbox consumes more power than a manual but it's deeper overdrive ratio often works to the advantage on the highway.. depending how fast you drive of course and the type of terrain you have to drive through. Our 3.0 consistently returns 20mpg plus doing mostly city and 2 lane highway speeds.. 60mph or less.

I get 20 easy ( even on a heavy foot day) ( light foot day closer to 25 ) but I never get into the city any or hardly ever,,, and I have the 5 speed stick,, not sure if a auto would make that much difference,,, when driving light footed on highway I can just feel my truck save gas when I shift to 5TH.... LOL ,, I live out in the country and try to stay out of city diving and dodging city idiot drivers, LOL

Last fall, my wife and I took a little trip to Texas for a wedding. Total miles on the trip was a little over 1000 miles. We have a '98 3.0/manual transmission Ranger that is really a stripper, except that it's got the 7-foot bed option.
The weather was cool enough that we didn't use the AC and most of the miles were interstate miles where we wouldn't stop for hours at a time. I drove the speed limit (75, give or take), but my wife drives like a scalded dog with little or no regards to the posted speed limit. I had just put in new spark plugs, air and fuel filter and made sure the tires were at maximum pressure.
We averaged 28 MPG.

Wow 28 is good for any truck,, I do not understand why MFP4073 and Vicv only see 17,,, it must be rear end gears I guess ,,, maybe Kruse and I have close to the same rear end gearing and I have what I think is a bent axle housing ,,when I find a replacement I going to make sure it has the same gearing I have now !!!!!! I dont see 28 but I get at least 20 on a bad heavy foot day ,,, with a head wind ,, which tickles me,,, glad Kruse backed me up on the gas mileage of a 3.0 Stick !!!!!! I also just noticed that both Vicv and MFP have 4X4 trucks that must be the reason for only 17

You didn't say what year or 4.0 you were asking about. OHC or OHV? I have 94 4.0, 5 sp, 3:08 gears, 235-65-15 tires, free flow exhaust and CAI. 320000+ miles. When I was running everyday on highway I was getting 20-22 @80mph, but I dont run the trip any longer now just an around town work truck DD. Get 15-17 depending if AC in use or not.
I am not sure how the newer 4.0s go for mileage, but the 3.0 I believe is pretty much the same over the years but not sure. As you can see the mileage is not that different, but the capabilities of the truck will be with the bigger engine, so it will depend on what you want the truck to do, pull something, haul a trailer etc, go with 4.0.
If just a DD and no real need for a truck get a car with a 4cyl, my elantra gets 24+ in town almost 40 on highway. Wifes accord (3.0 v6) will get about 20 in town 28 or so on highway. BTW we run around 80 mph when on the highway all vehicles. My F350 FX4 PSD get around 18 on highway at that speed and its the vehicle of choice for travel since it is comfortable and large enough to do whatever is needed. so its your decision on what you really want a vehicle for.

My dads 92 ranger 4x4 averaged 22 mpg. 4 liter with auto. My 94 mazda with a 4x4 with 4 liter 5 speed and 16 inch tires will get 26 at 90 kmh ( 55 mph). The mpg's drop fast at speeds over 60 mph tho.
My 98 Mazda 4x4 4 liter auto averages 24 mpg and the 02 ranger 2wd I had got around 23/24 with the 3.0 and a 5 speed.

My 04 3.0 V6, automatic, two wheel drive, regular cab, short bed and 4.10 rear end just delivered 21.5 mpg on a 700 mile trip at 70 mph. I get around 14 to 15 around town running empty. I pull a 14 foot landscape trailer with it 4 days a week weighing about 3,000 pounds and average around 10.5 mpg under these conditions. Can't speak for the 4.0 but if I needed more power I could pull it with the diesel.

Ive got a 99 4x4 5speed 3.0 with a new motor that I installed this past winter. Best Ive seen with it so far is 19........but that is only if it never goes over 65mph. Ive put close to 10,000 miles on it already so it is broke in. If I run it at 80mph Im down to 17. Speed apparently kills the MPG. I had a 91 2wd 3.0 5 speed that my brother still owns and it has always done 20-22 no matter how fast you run it. It probably has 300,000 miles on it now and still gets those MPG. He got down to 15-16mpg so I screwed a new set of spark plugs in it and the MPG came right back.....LOL.
