Horn not working 06 Mountaineer

Hey all,

Horn just stopped working on my 06 mountaineer. 20 amp fuse is good. All other controls on steering wheel work fine (sound system, cruise control, no airbag problem). Also, when I press panic button on remote FOB the exterior lights flash until i press it again but no horn. Any thoughts? Thanks.

You should check the fuse listing in the owner's manual to see if there is a horn relay somewhere. Chance are pretty good if it does have a horn relay it will be integrated in to the Generic Electronic Module (GEM) though.

Thanks. Check the both fuse boxes. No relay mentioned in owners manual.

I just checked the factory service manual.

The horn on the 2006 Mountaineer is controlled via a horn relay inside the Smart Junction Box (SJB), and the relay is listed as "Non-removable." There's a 20A fuse for the horn in the SJB, fuse F14. Is that the fuse you checked previous?

There's also a 50A fuse, F2, in the Battery Junction Box that provides power to the horn relay. I suspect that if F2 were bad you'd have other things that don't work, but it's worth checking anyway.

The next step would be the check for power and ground at the horn itself using a test light. If you are getting power to the horn when the horn button is pressed and you have a good ground, then the issue is most likely the horn itself.

The horn would appear to be located on the left (driver's side) front inner fender, kind of above the forward end of the front wheel.

The fuse I checked is #14 in the passenger compartment fuse panel. I'll check the 50A fuse but everything else seems to be working. I thought there were two horns and that it was unlikely that both would go at the same time. I'll check the horn to see if the problem is there. Any idea where this smart junction box is?

Thanks

There are 2 horns that are wired in parallel. There's a chance that one horn failed some time ago and you didn't notice, and now the second has failed.

The SJB is probably the backside of the passenger compartment fuse panel, but I'd have to check that tonight to confirm.
