6.8 3V - vs - 6.2 mpg

Looking at a 2009-12 6.8 in a F250/350 vs the 6.2 gas also in a 250/350.

Which engine has less issues and better mpg?

To be honest they both are fairly reliable, the V10 is known for reliability but IMHO opinion is a little harder on the gas. The 6.2 seems to be better in MPG department, but really it depends on what your doing with the truck via pulling trailers etc.

While the V10 is a trooper it is a bit of a dinosaur when you compare it to the 6.2. The 6.2 IMHO is a far better ride and better on the gas end of the scale, not to mention the engines haven't really had a lot of issues.

The company I work for we had some 5.4's and still have a few but went to the V10's our V10's are being phased out for the 6.2'S and some 6.7's.

So far the 6.2's have all been good, we have only had one that has a valve issue, other than they have been just normal maintenance items, tires, brakes etc. The v10's are good trucks, the issues we have had is with spark plugs and exhaust studs breaking

Honestly you could do well with either one, but I would have to give the 6.2 the nod if it were my choice. Both can pull a trailer with ease, and both do very well in the maintenance department and being easy on the wallet repair wise.

What ever you decide, I dont think you would mind owning either truck , they are both good trucks

As pocketlint said, both are great motors. Some feel the v10 is a better tow engine because of its lower torque curve, and I'm sure all things equal, it would be, but they aren't equal, the 6.2 has a great 6 speed tranny, vs the v10's 5 speed and that would be the deciding factor for me between 2 identical trucks, Along with the condition of the over all truck. I love my 6.2, and encourage 4.30 gears with them, but 3.73's, which I have, aren't horrible at all. If you come across a great deal on the right v10 truck, I would not walk away from it. The 6.2 will yield slightly better mpg, but not a big difference. I averaged 9.5 towing 8500k 1600 miles.

If it were to be an everyday commuter with occasional towing 6.2 with 4:30 gears, if it's towing it will be doing as primary and commuting 2nd than V10 3V 4:30 would be my choice. I could be bias after after having the V10 with 285K miles on it towing.

I have a leer cap on it and carry 700# in the bed most of the time. I just did a drive Friday from Kingman, AZ towards Jefferson, CO (734 miles 13.5 hours) I averaged 15.5 mpg. When ramming around town idling for AC on job sites I'll get 13.5 +/-.

I have a bad daily commute for mpg, driving normal I get around 12. I've been trying to see how good I could get the last couple weeks, and I was in the high 14's. Empty on the interstate, my best is 17. I have 3.73's and the small 31" tires. Ccsb 4x4

Reliability:
6.2 edges out the 6.8. Both are great, reliable SD motors. I prefer the good ol' V8.
MPG:
6.2 will win for unloaded hwy driving, as for town/towing, they will be pretty comparable. There's plenty of 15mpg 6.2 reports for hwy driving.

I don't know anything about the 6.2 but I have an 06 FX4 with the 6.8 3Valve & 4:10 gears. Pretty much the ONLY time I use the truck is for towing our Travel Trailer. 8,700 LBS loaded for travel and I average 6 MPG towing the travel Trailer. I live here in the central valley of Communist California so when I travel I have to climb over some pass be it the Grapevine, Donner Pass, the Cuesta Grade etc. I can't tell you what it gets empty on the freeway or around town since I don't drive it far or long enough to find out. My truck is completely stock down to the rims & tire size.

My 06 F250 xtracab long box V10 with 4.10 gears got 14mpg. My 2012 F250 xtracab long box with 4.30 gears gets 15mpg. These are Canadian gallons. The V10 tows better and the V8 is more fun empty.

On average I've seen about 1 mpg better with the 6.2 rig over the 6.8,

However the 3v 6.8 is a much better tow rig, it's a smoother and quieter running motor as compared to the 6.2. And will pull at lower rpms than the 6.2,
Driving the 6.2 unloaded is just fine, and it likes to rev like a sports car.

Guess it really depends what you need the truck for, Gl
