Am I making a mistake? 1996 CCSB

I've been talking with a guy about 14 hours away about a 96 F250 CCSB XLT 4X4 Powerstroke with around 240000 miles on it. He has the truck listed at 5,000 which seems like a pretty dang good deal. He is the second owner and says it ran great when he parked it in storage about 2.5 years ago but he hasn't started since because he is worried the diesel has sat up. From the pictures it looks good interior is really clean and I'm not looking for perfect. What would you do? Is this a deal or no? Thanks for any help!

If it's clean and can run, it' sounds like a reasonable amount...although that depends also on the local asking price of trucks in your area. 240,000 miles is not a lot for that motor or the truck.

Just be ready to walk away if you can't get it running or it the pictures look way better than reality. Often times pictures do not show everything. Bring cash, and haggle, make the best deal you can.

By TALKING, do you mean actual conversation or text/email? If talking, then You are probably NOT dealing with a scammer. if text /email then More than likely you would be getting scammed.

5k is a LOW price for the truck and diesel does NOT go bad from sitting, but it can get algae But it still cant hurt anything to run it. If it is in the tank then it is in the WHOLE fuel system

14 hours to look at a truck that's not running ? i'm out.
as stated, pictures, especially craigslist pictures, can hide some pretty ugly blemishes.
maybe give some more info such as were the truck is located, and maybe a link to the ad ?

14 hours away, does he want to "ship" the truck to you, or is he willing to let you come check it out?

Any offers to ship the truck means it's a guaranteed scam.

I wonder, if it's such a great truck, why has it been in storage for 2.5 yrs??? Has he given any reason for that?

Happens pretty often actually, especially if they get a new/different vehicle. My buddy just picked up a decent '99 CCLB Dually 7.3 for $2000, and it's been sitting in a field since 2014. Previous owner got a new truck, didn't want to sell the old truck, but had no real use for it.

Thanks for the replies. I will attach the link. This truck is on craigslist and ebay. I have spoken to the guy on the phone a couple of times. He says work has him on the road a lot and he hates to get rid of it, the guy seems pretty normal just talking to him. I have ran into scams before but this doesn't seem like the normal scam if that's what it is..he has mentioned shipping it but he has also mentioned getting it flushed and driving it closer when he is headed east for work? Im out unless he wants to get it pretty close to where I live. Seems like at that price it would sell fairly quick? https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/5654207250.html

it's 20 years old with a quarter million miles on it.that's twice the price id be willing to pay.
there's no harm in finding these items desirable if you do: D50/short bed/manual trans but since the truck is equipped with these vs d60/long bed/auto trans then it just means you should be able to pay less when buying your truck.

I understand that's how it might seem but that's not where the market for these trucks is. If you run across a CCSB ford with a ZF5 and 7.3 with under 250,000 miles on it for 2,500 bucks let me know if your not interested because ill by it in a heartbeat and flip it for close to 3 times that here in the South.

That being said, I do see exactly what your saying. The problem is ALOT of folks find that set up desirable. :/

I would never drive 14 hours for a non-running truck, and any offer to ship the truck is 100% guaranteed to result in you not having your money, or a truck.

Notice the random picture of DieselBrad's old towing truck in there? That has fishy written all over it.. It also has two mileages listed. One is 243k the other is 262k. I don't know, I'd be leary. I saw this truck listed as well and was thinking scam. Also, the way he says call or email with your offer, is weird.

I don't know, If you know of someone that lives in the area, or someone from this board that lives in that area, maybe they'd go check it out for you?? After hearing about these people that drive 10 - 15 hours to go check out cars and trucks and then get killed for their money always, makes me leery. As a matter of fact, I just went and looked at a couple near the south side of Chicago, I had my son and his friend go with me, just for the simple fact that both of them have their conceal carry permits, It made me feel a lot safer that's for sure, I was able to check out these cars and they kept their distance with their heads on a swivel stick. It's sad to have to do this but in todays world, you can't trust anyone.
