OBS 7.3 Turbo Opinions Needed
So I'm at the point in my build where I'm just about done rebuilding the motor and ready to drop the motor back in. I just need help choosing a new drop in turbo that will fit well for my application and needs.
Goals : Truck is going to be lifted about 12 inches and on 40's. I will be re-gearing it to help with the 40's but would still like a little bit of extra power over stock. I'm not going power crazy here. This isn't a drag truck and never will be I just want a truck with a little bit more get up and go then stock. As far as towing goes the biggest thing it would tow is about a 40 camper maybe 2 times a year and not very far at all. I believe it weighs about 10,000 pounds if not a little more.
All that being said I am still unsure of what size injectors I'm going to be running. I have converted to electric fuel pump so I should be able to supply either stage 1 or 2 with ample fuel but I feel as though I should choose my injectors based on the turbo I choose. I have seen a few and will list them below. I feel as though the 1.0 AR exhaust houseing would be a good choice for my application as it seams to be a more streetable size but still OK for towing (which it would be doing very little of).
94-97 Power Stroke BDP Dominator 66 Turbo D66 w/ Billet Compressor Wheel 1.15 A/R Housing, " Now Optional 1.0 A/R Housing "
The first turbo I'm looking at is the Beans D66. I would want to get it with the 1.0 AR housing as I feel a quicker spool would be better in my application as I do very little highway towing or very little highway driving at all. It also seams to be a very popular turbo among the forums and for many applications as well. The only thing I don't like about it is the price of about $1300. Which is why I'm looking at this turbo as well.
94 97 Ford Powerstroke 7 3L Diesel Upgrade Billet TP38 turbocharger 3 5'' Intake | eBay
This is just an ebay TP38 turbo. The reason I'm looking at this turbo is price mainly. I could buy almost two of these turbos before buying one D66....but it IS a ebay turbo which is scary to me. I know a few years ago an ebay turbo would only be good for about a month or so then crap out but I have heard they have gotten ALOT better in recent years. The bigger sized intake housing isn't a big deal to me as I can fab a new intake boot up pretty easily. In the product details it lists pretty much the same specs as the D66 which is another reason I'm looking at this turbo. The ebay turbo even describes how it has 360 degree thrust bearing lubrication system which Beans doesn't have listed in it's D66 description. On paper this turbo looks to be an exactly identical turbo to the D66....but It's an ebay turbo and I can't seam to find any information on guys running them anywhere which is scary as well to me.
Both of these turbos should be able to support the modest power levels I'm after whether I choose stage 1 or 2 injectors. Both turbos also come in the 1.0 exhaust housing size I want. The only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger on the ebay turbo is ebay turbos reputations and the lack of information on them. Yes the ebay seller does have a very good rating and they do have about the same warranty policy as Beans but again there's just no information on the ebay turbo from the guys like us that actually slap em on our trucks and test them out first hand. Part of me wants to be the trailblazer and actually see how good this ebay turbo is but part of me wants to just buy the D66 and not have to worry about it.
Alright so now what do you guys think....
Is the 1.0 AR exhaust housing a good choice for my application?
Do any of you know of anyone running an upgraded ebay turbo?
Think I should trail blaze and just try the ebay one out or stay the tried and true route with the D66?
Any input would be greatly appreciated thanks!

DieselBrad: Really?? From all the forums I've read on the subject it seams everyone likes the D66 and reccomends it to others. What are its weaknesses? Also I'd love to see close to 350-400rwhp if I could on a hot tune but also be able to turn the power levels down to make a very friendly drive around town truck.
89f2urd: Yeah I don't have any intention of replacing it with a stock turbo even though I still have stock sticks. Want to replace the turbo with an upgraded one is need for bigger sticks I plan on installing in the future ya know?

As for 3450-400rwhp you would want some 175 injectors. To match the with the correct air flow you would want a H2E,T4, s366, gtp38r ball bearing.
A D66 would overspin itself to death in short order with those injectors
people are CHEAP, and That is why they buy those turbos, Not because they are good

yes, REALLY. Unless it is stock injector truck they just over spin themselves(much like a stock turbo) and come apart.

Neither. A turbo is only designed for a certain amount of RPM. and the D66 is designed for the same RPM as a STOCK turbo(since it is pretty much a stock turbo with some minor differences)

So your saying the stage 1's and 2's create turbo rpms much higher then stock and it just can't handle it? I'm assuming the thrust bearing would be the thing that goes in that case correct?

The d66 reduces drive pressure and increases high boost flow at the expense (albeit marginal) of spool time. It's an upgrade for those pushing the stocker to its limits, but not enough to really justify an expensive turbo upgrade.
It's also a "misewell" if getting the stocker rebuilt.
If you have a good junkyard, a van turbo is a dirt cheap way to achieve similar results.

I researched it as well and came to similar conclusions about the van turbo. What would be the max size injector a D66 could reliably handle given it got dyno tuned?

Just did a real quick price comparison and I can put in the GTP38R for just about the same price I could put the D66 in...that being said I feel like I'd be an idiot not to upgrade to the GTP38R BUT I do already have an intercooler and piping that bolts up to the stock OBS 7.3 turbo, a 3" down pipe that also bolts up to the stock OBS 7.3 turbo, and a EBPV deleted pedestal for the stock OBS 7.3. I know I will lose the pedestal and I can sell that but will the intercooler and downpipe be able to bolt up the the GTP38R or will I be losing them? I read that if I get the 1.15 ar exhaust housing I can bolt my modded stock OBS 7.3 epb housing to it and run my 3" down pipe but couldn't find any info on the intercooler working or not. Anyone know any of that to be fact?
