From my recent experience with 2.5" and Magnaflow straight through mufflers I do not like the sound at all. I think with a crossover pipe it may have helped a little with the Chevy beretta sound I have. I've decided to go to 3" with no crossover to keep some of sound I do like and possibly same muffler exiting right before the rear tires.

I have dual 3 inch pipes with an X-pipe on a little old 347 and I have no issues with bottom end torque.
What it boils down to is what do you want? An fe has more bottom end then my motor. There are a few articles and info on proper placement of a X-pipe, with enough digging can be found. It involves a crayon and trial and error to see where the crayon melts on the exhaust pipes.
Hey I saw you had long tube headers in your signature, Are those the ones you used with your 347? I am looking for ones that will clear that block and a 4r70w transmission on my longbox.

Yes they are long tubes for 65-70 mustangs. I have the part number in my sig, 6612s I think. I can't vouch if they'll fit with an automatic transmission because I'm running a T5 manual.

Edit-yeah all the header info is there in my sig. I have some posts about the install in my thread I'm pretty sure.
