Ok guys thanks for all our help still confused though.
just came back from and 1800 mile trip with our 14000lb 5th wheel with very large hills 7% grade. Truck ran good had good power at higher rpm lots of smoke must have been making some boost as i had the propane on and it use 23 gal going up but very little on the way back?
What is EBPV ?
Thanks

Exhaust back pressure valve. As a note, lots of smoke does not equal lots of power. Smoke is unburnt fuel which is a loss of power potential. What are your EGTs while towing up the grades?

Running on small hills 800-1000 on big hills working hard it would climb to 1100 and more if i didn't back off or down shift don't like to run higher than 1100. turbo whistle isn't very loud and only can here at 2700 rpm and above.

You can run 1200 all day long. Don't be afraid to Rev it up to 3000. If turbo not spooling then maybe you have a leak in up pipes. A leaf blower to exhaust and some soapy water can find leaks.

Maybe a dumb question, but where is your pyro probe located?

With your set-up, assuming you have a straight pipe, you should hear the turbo at idle.

With a 50 hp tune, you shouldn't be blowing A LOT of smoke, even at wide open throttle

I needed truck back as we are leaving on vacation. going to put a stock turbo back on. any thoughts and suggestions appreciated.HB

X2 I had a guy yesterday tell me that our trucks had a wastegate (ebpv) and that I needed to be careful deleting it as it could cause my turbo to spin too fast and blow out the tailpipe... lol

I was talking to a "diesel mechanic" and he was like... wait. You don't have a waste gate??? Where does your boost go??

I was like... Uh out the tail pipe...

Hey bud I am only trying to help out here after reading this, so please don't take any offense. First off your boost or manifold pressure is incorrect. If you are seeing 1-3 psi at 3000 rpm you essentially are making next to nothing for manifold pressure for the exhaust back pressure that is feeding the turbine side. Either your turbo is truly toasted, and by now I'm sure half of your compressor wheel has gone through the motor to only produce 3 psi at that rpm. Inspect...

I have seen exhaust wheels desintegrated before...some by heavy fuel tunes, and big manifold pressure leaks. Literally melting the fins away, propane also assists this process.

That all being said your mechanic is a moron...1. for saying there is a waste gate. 2. for putting propane on the truck. I would take it off immediately or go buy a new motor here real soon. modern day diesel tuning has proven propane an old and poor power making method. Nitrous would actually be a better choice... The best is a chip and just sticking with diesel... nitrous and propane both change engine timing, flashpoint, and cylinder pressures.... good luck..

If you are blowing a ton of black smoke at high rpm you have bigger issues, likely boost leaks, vlown turbo, dirty air filter...

I'm willing to bet that pyrometer is in the down pipe isn't it....

18k is no joke for a 7.3 to pull.... even more so if the motor is not fueling/cooling/running properly

Ok guys I appreciate or comments and help
Today i installed a boost gauge. My ETG is 2 inches from the turbo in the down pipe. running in drive way no boost. just the truck going down the road getting on it 17 psi ? I know someone said that it would not make boost if no load? Now what?

took the y pipe off to tap for boost line
