Northern tool spin on filter, now with installs
My 4r100should be rebuilt by the end of next week so I've been searching remote mounted spin on filters. I was gonna buy the kit from dieselsite.com but $220 for the kit plus another $22 for the pressure gauge...yea I don't think so! Plus I want to hook it up my own way not with hoses drooped over my frame rail, so after looking for a few hours online I found this
Nortrac Hydraulic Return Filter Assembly — 20 GPM | Hydraulic Accessories| Northern Tool + Equipment
Seems to be nice the reviews are really good and I can change the filter to a better one if needed. So what do yous think? Did I make a good call or what? Dieselsite uses a 22micron filter and the northern tool is a 10micron but there are reviews of people using this kit on vehicle transmissions and not having problems. One thing is I have no idea what size thread the filter uses? Hopefully it's a standard size so I can get the filters locally?

My first thought was to be careful and not plug that small micron filter, especially if using additives or not changing at required intervals but with the bypass valve, I can't imagine any issues.
I take it you're still using the stock pan filter in addition?
I still remove the pan periodically, clean the pan and magnet, and replace the stock filter regularly. 325k later.

I have my new 6.0 cooler on the way and I'll have the hard lines all flushed throughly before the trans goes back in. I'm gonna keep the 10micron filter for a month or so and then change it out most likely for a larger micron one, maybe the one from dieselsite.com will fit this bracket I hope? And yes I'm keeping the in pan filter as well and I change that at my normal 30k DIY fluid flushes

Good choice adding the 6.0 cooler.
Climbed the long, steep, Cajon Pass in So Cal this last weekend at over 100* and my tranny temp never went over 185 pulling my 15,500 gvw trailer.
Good luck.

I put a remote transmission filter kit from Summit Racing on my '01 several years ago. Good quality and price. I use a NAPA 1269 replacement (20 micron) filter. It has the best filtration/flow rate I found for the price. (Last one was about $13.00 a month ago.) NAPA 1269 is made by WIX and crosses to WIX 51269.
This filter is for a 3/4"-16 TPI spin-on base, some of the kits have metric threads like the GM Allison tyranny (about 3/4-20 TPI) and the filter looks the same, so check that or cross reference the filter that comes with your kit.

Finally got an answer and my trans will be done Friday so after work today and tomorrow I'll be adding my new 26row cooler and the spin on filter assembly. So I got to thinking even though I have a new cooler and I didn't blow debree through the lines or radiator cooler, after I flush the lines the add the new cooler can I put the new filter on the supply line instead of the return? This way the fluid is filtered and clean before it gets to the radiator cooler and then new trans cooler? $340 dollars is a lot of money to have something happen and clog it and all I had to do was put the filter on the supply line instead, what yous think?

I just kinda scanned the responses here, but thought I'd show what I've been using on all my auto trans vehicles for the last 10-15 yrs.
It's just a simple Ford oil filter and a universal filter mount.

And a V8 for filter for a 460.
I mount it and run the "hot" oil into it than into the cooler. Change the filter every oil change. I think that filter is the only reason the C6 in my off road rig still works lol
As for cleaning the cooler lines and cooler you can buy a can on cleaner/flush at the parts store last I remember.

I'll bet you will be glad to get your truck back! Keeping an eye on that temp gauge will do more to save your transmission than anything else!
"...can I put the new filter on the supply line instead of the return?"
Put your filter ahead of the cooler. That location is recommended because hot fluids flow through the filter media better and you will have less back pressure on the line besides the other advantages you mention.
I did not want to stand the cost of fully synthetic fluid and found Conoco-Phillips makes a well reviewed semi-synthetic Mercon V licensed fluid branded "Conoco/Phillips 66/Union76". I was able to buy two cases from a local bulk dealer at a very reasonable price, (you may have to call around.) It's reported that Conoco-Phillips manufactures "Motorcraft" branded Mercon V for Ford.
I checked pricing at the bulk distributor after becoming discouraged because retailers in my area only seemed to carry four to six quarts of Mercon V and priced them like they were the last on earth! Two cases will leave you four or five quarts for a power steering flush/refill or "for the shelf." Just don't put it in your transfer case.
