Projects on my '78 F150 - Part 1 (Tailgate and Bed)
I finally got my phone pictures moved to my computer so I could post a few of the mini-projects I've worked on the last year.
Part I: Tailgate
When I got this truck it had a wrecked tailgate, looks like it had been folded in the middle. PO straightened it out as best he could but it didn't work. Welds on both ends were broken, big wrinkle in the middle of the back of it. Here in Texas most old tailgates seem to become bench seat backs so I had to go out of state to find a good one. It might have been the timing but I just could not find a good tailgate for months, finally I ran across a blue one from Utah - it was in great shape so I bought it. While I waiting for it to arrive I was nosing around and found a mint green one from South Dakota - it had been stored in a barn for 30+ years - original owner took the tailgate off not too long after he got the truck. It had the exact trim package that the wrecked one had so I bought it too!.
Now to get the tailgate painted - Found a place here locally (Detroit Customs) that would paint it. I stripped the green one down and took it (and the wrecked one) to them to paint.
all the hardware back on !
Done!
What did I do with the wrecked tailgate?...
Now that the tailgate situation is resolved i can move on to the next project...
Part II: Bed Liner
It had a years old Red spray in liner that had faded into an ugly rust color. It was terrible - looked like the whole inside of the bed was rusted out. I searched on methods to remove it (chemicals, flame/heat, etc.) none of which seemed apealing so one day I took a putty knife, utility knife and started cutting and peeling at it. Took 2 days to remove the bottom and sides up to the front - my fingers barely worked after that...
Before
After the removal of the old liner (There is a toolbox in it so the front of the bed by the cab was protected from the elements so you can see the original red liner - I didn't remove that)...
Picked up the truck from the Line-X shop. You'll see why I had them spray over the top rails in the next pic...
I have these rail caps that dug into the paint before so they sprayed to the edge. Turned out really nice.
With the rails back on and toolbox back in.
Had them do the back side of the tailgate as well.
On to the next mini-project...
