Yeah, I already rebuilt it. Supposedly it is pretty reliable, favored in off road applications.

I had a holly 1850 on a 302 a decade ago, it was a good carb.

Look for a Autolite 4100. Basic and reliable.

Found one 4100 on craigslist for $325, I will keep looking.

Valves held WD40. Guess I can pull em apart, check for true, clean them, and lap them. I saw a video on lapping with a drill. I work with a drill everyday. I think I will try this out with a hand lapper. I want to feel it, not just get it done. I will mess something up pretty easily with a drill.

Hey, thanks for all the help on this so far, guys. I can imagine that it sucks hearing the same things and giving the same answers, especially when I am just trying to keep it stock and keep it running. I really appreciate you all taking the time to post.

You should be able to find a rebuild-able 4100 for $100-150.

I see them often on 332-428 Ford FE Engine Forum . You should post a want add in the fordfe.com classified section. Many of those guys have spare parts lying around and will usually sell things reasonable when someone asks.

Long list of 4100's recently for sale:
FordFE.com Classifieds: carbs

This one may still be for sale:
FordFE.com Classifieds: Autolite 4100 1.12 for sale

Here are more:
FordFE.com Classifieds: .. any have a 4100 booster for a 65 Galaxie with 390 ??

Wes Adams should have some complete carbs. Give him a shout at HillsideAuto@charter.net

Wes is getting close to finishing a 4100 I sent to him to be rebuilt and converted to electric choke.

I found a Holley 1850-2 for $75. As long as I install a check valve, a Holley is a good carb.

Based on this article, an 1850 seems to be a pefect carb?

Are you referring to the power valve?

Yes, I installed a check ball in my power valve before that prevents it from blowing the power valve in the event of a backfire.

Ok, still cart before the horse...

I am heading out to buy a Street Demon 1900, bnib. It is costing more than I wanted to spend, but getting a used carb with the possibilty of having to rebuild it may be about the same. My budget for a carb was around $150 total, I am getting the SD for $200.

I have read there are linkage issues and air cleaner issues. I guess we will see.

OP is in CA .. where 1960's cars abound in wrecking yards (no salt on the roads here).

Find a 1965/68 Galaxie/LTD 390 4V/428; 1966/70 Fairlane or 1968/70 Torino 390 4V/428; 1967/70 Mustang/Cougar 390 4V/428 at a pick-a-part yard, probably no more than 20 bucks for a 4100.

1965/67 289 4V (A engine code) Mustang & 1967 289 A code Cougars also have it. As do other '65/70 FoMoCo vehicles with 302's/429's and etc.

That is true, I am in SoCal. Coincidentally, I live within 30-40 minutes of Mr. ND.

I frequent about a dozen yards that are spread out over enough freeway to take an 8 hour Saturday to get to, lol.

The yards dont always put cars out on weekends, so carbs and intakes, etc are gone in the first hour or so. A truck will be picked clean in a week.

Mr. ND, when am I going to be invited over? Or should I just show up?
