87 F150, 300 I6, Exhaust Leak

Hey all. Picked up an 87 F150 last week. Runs great. 300 I6 with a 4 speed.

Previous owner removed smog pump and this things has a horrible exhaust leak I believe is related. Any way I can tell what should or shouldn't be there from the removal of the smog stuff, and what should be plugged/capped off so I can see if this is where my leak is coming from?

Hello amsnss,
Can you post up some pictures of your engine bay?
Also, why do you think it has an exhaust leak? Smell it? Hear it?
Why do you think it's related to the smog pump?

We're not there, so you need to paint the picture. It's hard to be able to be of much help otherwise.

Hey thanks for your reply. I'll try to get some pictures up this evening. The reason I think exhaust leak is really nothing more than it sounding like any other exhaust leak I've had. I did happen to find a leak in the tube that runs from the egr back to the exhaust manifold. My quandary here is how I should approach fixing it. The smog pump is still there but there's line unhooked and things missing, so this is what left me thinking it was smog related.

It's not something you want to do for a good length of time since it can cause your engine to overheat, but one way to search for a leak is to remove the belt so that the fan doesn't spin and then fire it up and see if you can feel air moving. Without the fan, there should be none. But if you can feel it, exhaust is coming out somewhere and being able to feel for it should help.

There also are some one way valves that have to do with the smog system that may have rusted out, allowing hot exhaust to come out when it shouldn't. I had one go out and the heat melted half of my emissions equipment. I don't know where they all are on an EFI engine, but I think there are some on the EGR system, and maybe some that originally attached to the smog pump.
