For the life of me I cannot understand why people want one so bad! The Def gets refilled after driving 5,000 miles or more! That gauge is going to barely ever move. I mean, I guess if you were going to constantly drive back and forth from coast to coast...maybe...but it's not like the current truck doesn't give you plenty of warning. JMO.
It should be on ever models. That's like ford saying well if you buy a platinum you can have a gas gauge
DEF gets used up at about the rate you need to have your engine oil changed. Perhaps you'd like a gauge dedicated to when you should change your oil? No, on a long-interval item like that, it makes more sense to simply have a message center warning.
Ample warning is given on all trim levels. I've thought it to be completely ridiculous that RAM has a dedicated DEF gauge. It looks silly - it doesnt move much.
Fuel is something completely different and much higher priority, as dedicated gauges should be.
The "gauge" that RAM uses is only an estimate, anyway. The big three all use the same method for measuring DEF - 4 electrodes in the wall of the tank. So the "gauge" is simply using a mileage and idling algorithm compared against the known approximate level between electrodes.
A float gauge cannot be used which would provide an accurate measurement, because DEF will freeze.
The XLT might be able to be optioned with the 8" instrument panel display - Lariat and up have it standard. Those models can display a digital bar representation of DEF level.
It's one of several options to go in that slot. So if you're like a normal human that doesn't want a DEF gauge, you can swap it for one of the other more useful gauges. I honestly don't remember what all the options were, I was never one to complain about idiot lights.
All Diesel models should come factory with DEF gauge. Funny some say a gauge is a pain in the ***? You do realize you don't have to look at it , but if it's not there you can't look at it. in the near future they all will come standard with it anyways.
