Manual to automatic

I'm going to change the tranny from manual to automatic on my 82 f150 flareside 4x4...... Has anyone done this and if so what am I facing? What type of transmission am I looking for?

Thanks

What engine do you currently have and what do you use the truck for or what are your plans for use? In my '89 I swapped 302 engine/5 speed trans. to 351W/C6. Your engine will determine which trans. you can easily use.

I'm pretty sure a C-6 would work but I don't know if the AOD was used behind the 300-6. I know the C-6 would require hooking up a kick-down rod to the carb. and running a vacuum line to the modulator.

I'm not sure if the current cross-member would work, but if you picked up the cross-member from the donor truck it should fit.

Of course the trans.would have to be from a 4x4 and you may need to alter the length of both drive shafts. There is also the issue of the shift lever, but I recommend just using an automatic floor shifter. I used a Hurst Pro-matic 2.

Hope this helps

The other thing I see posted with the C6 trany is if going to a 300 the bell housing has to be for a small block.
I would say most are for big blocks.

Agree with what has been said, but for clarification the tranny you want is the small-block bolt pattern, which came behind the 300 six, 302, and 351W. (I think it also came behind the 3.8L, but there are fortunately very few of those out there.)

You can either swap out the steering column to an auto one or go with the floor shifter, as suggested. And, as said, it does have to be of the 4wd persuasion as the transfer case bolts to it.

I am going to guess if all you can find is a 4x2 C6 in the right bell housing you can have the output shaft changed to a 4x4 one but to do so the trany needs to be rebuilt as the output shaft is the last to come up and first to go back in the case.

4x4 c6 with the small block pattern are very common. It was standard with a 4x4 and the smaller engines if you didn't have overdrive. The 4x2 c6 with the small pattern may be harder to find. They usually used a c4 or c5 with those.

I went from a t19 manual to a c6. Very easy swap. Make sure you get a starter for an automatic transmission. my c6 was redone and has a nice lokar shifter, and tci aluminum pan. It will be for sale soon. And make sure if you do go c6, it has the proper adapter for the transfer case.

Would you happen to have a parts list and what you did for the kick down? I realize you could put it in 2nd but I'd rather it be done automatically. Any issues with drive shaft lengths?
