My very first Diesel... 86 F250

I've been itching for a diesel and I've got a couple 86 F250 supercab projects that have been dragging along as I've moved and got a new job... So when I found this about 5 minutes from my new house I jumped on it.

86 F250 XLT Lariat Super Cab 4x4, 6.9 IDI, C6, 3.55 LS 10.25 and Dana 50 TTB in the front. With a plow... And two blades... 98% rust free. I wish I could say it was 98% dent free however...

It's got a lot of previous owner special upgrades, like chopped and welded bronco seats on what looks like a bed frame to mount them. Why he didn't just drill the inner holes and weld some plates to reinforce them I'll never know. I'm going to use the interior from one of my other trucks. Three trucks are going to become 2 trucks. I'm also going to put the D60 under this one and run the TTB with a 3" lift under the gas truck. That truck's getting a 4spd. Not sure what gears as I have both 3.55's and 4.10's. I guess it'll depend on the tires I decide to run. How high till I can run military 37's? I've got a good running 351w for it and a fresh 393 short block too... The 393, T19 and 4.10's might be a pretty fun truck even with 37's...

Both the gas trucks are in similar condition each with their individual problem areas like the bed on one is better, but no tailgate and the bulkhead it smashed whereas the other has really bad rot on the wheelwells.... Given everything else and having to make the call on which one I fix and which one was parts I just left everything sit. Now I have direction and will use the best of the parts on the new truck, the second best on the gas truck and junk or sell the rest.

I was worried because I had to wait for the guy to get a replacement title. It took almost two weeks, but it worked out. The started died on him yesterday and so he replaced it shortly before I bought the truck...

That's a good looking truck. I like the two-tone. You gonna Paint the doors too match, or paint the whole truck a different color?

Looks like you have enough parts to make two really good trucks. That's by far the cheapest way to do it. Good plan, Stan.

Different colors, but probably a two tone. I'd like to do a deep red with a black stripe, but my wallet will probably vote for a black truck with a red stripe. I might go black and white with a white stripe and roof like some of the fancier two tones.

It's getting a porno red interior though. Almost all of my trucks have red guts, I'm making it a theme...

f100beatertruck,

Fwiw, you might contact the "collision department" of your local technical schoolor community college for a GREAT & CHEAP repainting job.

Fwiw, I've had 2 Mercedes diesel sedans painted by local community college students. All I paid for was the paint, shop supplies & a 50.oo donation to the school. = 635.oo for the 1985 300D & 700.oo for the 300SDL.
(Compare that price to the 2,000.oo price that I was quoted on the 1986 300SDL by a "commercial shop".)

The only "problem" with having vehicles painted by schools is that they normally have a "waiting list" to get your vehicle repainted. - Alamo Colleges usually has a 30-45 day "wait" to repair body damages/paint/re-upholster a vehicle.
(As soon as I have the cash, I'm going to have the community college paint my 1982 300CD, too.)

Just a "thought" to get a nice job & save some $$$$$$$$.

yours, satx

My biggest issue is time. I've done metal fab, body work, paint, etc, so it's not a problem doing it, it's a problem getting the time. I'll keep it in mind though.

That's how I know that red paint is really expensive compared to black. Black is about the cheapest you can get.

Here's my last project... I did all the rust repair, bodywork and paint. Two stage urethane. There's a reason it's black and not the original silver... $32/qt vs $78/qt... Red's are worse, although for some reason I want to say Dodge's PR4 isn't that bad for a red. It's been a few years though.

100beatertruck,

The reason that red is so expensive is that DUPONT owns ALL the red pigment that is suitable for finish coats of auto/marine paint.
(Thus, my antique TEXAS MAID OSPREY will be BLUE over WHITE rather than RED/WHITE. - The paint's cost for blue is less than half as much as red.)

yours, satx
