Are you sure it's the rear brakes? Generally if the rear brakes were set incorrectly (say too tight), the drums would get extremely hot after a drive. If they were set to loose, they just won't do anything.
What makes me think it might not be your rear brakes, is that the rear brakes on an unloaded truck are just about useless and have almost no stopping power at all. They'll just start to lockup with the truck hardly slowing down at all.

I learned to apply a slight amount of pressure on the brake pedal to warmup the brakes. Worked like a charm within a few hundred feet. Otherwise if I hit the brakes at the end of the drive the rear wheels would skid in the gravel. If I drove the truck everyday, very little issue.
