touchy rear brakes.

hey guys,

my 92 f150 with the rear abs are a bit touchy. if you haven't drove the truck it will almost put you through the windshield.

how do you set the rear brakes?

it has new wheel cylinders and brake pads. im just wondering if there not set right.

thanks

Were they like that before replacing the wheel cylinders and shoes? Are you sure the wheel cylinders are the correct size replacement? The star wheel sets the adjustment. How (tight) did you adjust the shoes?

Are you sure it's the rear brakes? Generally if the rear brakes were set incorrectly (say too tight), the drums would get extremely hot after a drive. If they were set to loose, they just won't do anything.

What makes me think it might not be your rear brakes, is that the rear brakes on an unloaded truck are just about useless and have almost no stopping power at all. They'll just start to lockup with the truck hardly slowing down at all.

Mine do it after it rains and it hasn't been driven. Once I stop a few times they are normal.

Both of my '93 Lightnings exhibited this behavior.

yes it was like this before the new stuff was installed.

yes its the rear brakes because you can feel them locking up.

as stated above you can drive it for awhile and there ok. but if it sits for a little while like a week it will go back to being touchy rear brakes.

I learned to apply a slight amount of pressure on the brake pedal to warmup the brakes. Worked like a charm within a few hundred feet. Otherwise if I hit the brakes at the end of the drive the rear wheels would skid in the gravel. If I drove the truck everyday, very little issue.

Identical issue in my '96, same solution too!
