Auto Meter 2980, 4000 RPM Tachometer

Just replaced a very cheap 8000 RPM tach with an Auto Meter 4000 RPM and thought I’d pass on a few tips.

Actually I don’t know why anyone would put an 8K tach in a stock 240 six, they just don’t rev that high.

Anyway, the instructions are pretty straight forward except they don’t tell you that there is a thin brown transparent tape covering the 2 adjustment tabs on the switch that controls the 8, 6, or 4 cylinder selection. Auto Meter 2890 tach’s are factory set at 8 cylinder so if your putting this on a 6 it has to be changed. This requires the dexterity of a neurosurgeon but with patience it’s not too bad. Here's a few pix showing the factory setting, and the 6 cylinder selection. First picture is the factory 8 cyl setting, second is the 6 that I changed it to. Hope this helps anyone who may buy one of these.

Note: I got tired of trying to remove all the tape, so the little brown glob on top the switch in the pix is the remnants of it. The instructions are at the bottom in a PDF.

WOW...I didn't know any tach's were made only showing 0-4000 rpm. I wouldn't mind one showing 0-6000, mine goes to 10,000 and that definitely higher than I will ever see.

Auto Meter makes a 5K and 6K tach and they're running a rebate until March 31st.

Thanks very much amigo, Double and T.Dog. I have had an old Sun 6K tach, for over 40 years, and it finally quit working... Now I have a cheepie 8K Sun from CHINA... and will now order one from Auto Meter at 5 or 6 K... Thanks again, the face looks like it will match my old heavy truck, round instrument, cluster close enough...

Update:
Auto Meter 4K tach, part number 2890, $97.68 after $10 rebate
Auto Meter 5K tach, part number 2888, $122.81 after $20 rebate
Auto Meter 6K tach, part number 2891, 97.68 after $10 rebate
I found the best prices at egauges.com and that’s where I bought mine. Free shipping too.
No I don’t work for Auto Meter or egauges, I just do a lot of searching for the best deal.

Thanks for the heads up pm. I already have this tach, but a 6k would have been better.

I went to the egauges.com web site, and found some way nice 3 3/8" old school tachs. My instrument cluster, is from a vintage F600, with the aircraft looking round B&W gauges. I have the vacuum, spedo, and all but the early tach. I am going to go with Double's recommendation, as well as Turbo's 6K update, as I think he's right on that score.. Photos when its done amigos.. thanks for the heads up...

Just an FYI, the 4K Auto Meter tach that I bought is 2 5/8 inch and is pretty easy to read even with my farsightedness.

It sure is amigo, but for my dash cluster, I would like to fill the 3 3/8" hole on the right side of the spedo . Love that color of your truck... I think that was the factory color of mine, but the paint company tried to copy the glove box door, as it was faded the least after 40 years. They came close, but as Monica Lewinsky said.. "No Cigar"... Yours has it to a 'T'..

A tip on paint identification. The inside of my 68 F100 is factory Holly Green but the outside was repainted several years ago by a previous owner. I didn't know he used a different color when I bought some touch up paint and then found out it didn't quite match. Enter my local Auto Paint and Parts store guy. He has an instrument that can "read" a wide range of wavelengths in the paint spectrum and he was able to perfectly match the outside color. It's GM Woodland Green. They also have the ability to sell whatever color you need in a spray can. Perfect for touch up. If you need to match a color check with a good local Auto Paint and Parts shop. Here's a picture of my GM Woodland Green truck.

That is a sweet ride Double, and the color is almost the color of $$$$$$ which we all like a little of... The light must have been a bit different, on the inside shots.. Here's a couple of photos of my truck, after the most recent paint job.. The auto paint store, in la Paz, Baja, has a computer match, but it still does not match the same every time.. so for this last paint job, we took it all down, fixed the rust spots on the drip rail and just over the windshield, then primed & painted the entire truck again.. hope its the last time for awhile..

Your interior color looks very similar to the color of my '69 --Norway Green (color code N).

Yes it does, my dash almost matches perfectly.. The glove box door is what we took the truck color from, and the paint store in La Paz, used it and tried to match best they could. I do love the clean lines of your truck. How do you think my truck will look with the top and cab back painted white, like some were ordered from the factory..??
