Running Boards

I pulled the trigger on a 2011 STX Supercab in Tuxedo Black - it hadn't gone through detail or inspection and will be delivered later this week. I'll post photos then.

I already know that the running boards have to go, I can't stand chrome.

Does anyone know of a good place to buy from? I found a few websites doing a quick Google search, but thought I'd ask here. I know some manufactures are on here, though I haven't gotten a feel for what all and whom, but ideally I'd like to support if possible.

This style struck my fancy:

Over 100 views and no responses guess running boards don't excite guys around here ....I have the plain ones that come on xlt but they have actually grown on me especially after the lift, I've had several people ask if I had running boards put on guess they weren't as noticeable before it was lifted.....I'm leary of the tube style had a coworker who's wife while stepping out of his truck slipped and her foot went in between tube and truck as she fell to ground and ouch not pretty

I appreciate the input, truly. One reason I have to have to running boards is because my better half needs to assist. I didn't think about that with the tube style. They make some pretty large oval 6" ones. Something to certainly ponder.

I've thought of just refinishing the ones on there, scuffing up the chrome, there seems to be many opinions about how to do that. What to do. I have a few days before it arrives and decide.

N-fab makes some pretty trick nerf bars. I'm kind of particular to amp steps myself though.

I had the NFab 6 steps on my 06. They were aesthetically pleasing and worked well. Now that I have power steps I will have to put in a vote for Amp. Bite the bullet and do it. Amp power steps.

I have seen those and they are really awesome. I prefer the look of no running boards, but again I have to have them so the Amp ones would be a good compromise. Not sure I'd get it past my better half though.

How was install? I can do some wiring; stereo, dashcam, reverse cam etc. I do see there is a Plug n' Play for an extra $100. Does anyone have a preferred shopping place? I've used SummitRacing.com in the past for things.

There's a vendor on another Forum that was pushing Amps out the door for sub $1k this past year. I'm sure that pricing still exists. The install is not terrible from what I've heard. The plug and play option is a little slower to respond...meaning deploy and retract, but it does ease the install some.

I may look into this. There is a place right up the street; can see their lot from my driveway and all they do is truck accessories so I may see what it'd cost for them to install. It seems pretty simple based on the videos so thinking it should be more than $300.

You will be extremely happy with the AMP steps and especially if you can get them for 1k or under. I paid closer to $1,300 had them drop shipped to the dealer and let them put them in before I picked up my truck. If you decide to go the AMP route, make sure you get the updated software version (Im sure they are all by now), the only thing that bugs me with mine, is no delay between opening doors on the super crew. The new ones will have a slight delay, so your boards aren't going up and down between opening and closing driver/rear passenger doors.

I never thought of that. With the SuperCab the front doors have to be open anyway for the back to be. Makes sense. I think I found them for just a bit under $1,100 and based on talking to the sales guy I think I can install them myself. Tapping power is something I can do. Might even get lucky and have pre-drilled holes for everything.

I bought mine from Summit racing 4 inch oval stainless. I would go with the 5 inch oval if doing it again they look better.

I do like Summit Racing. Between them and RockAuto I always could find what I needed for the old Ford.

I painted my chrome steps. Cost: $20 and a couple hours of my time.

I may still do that in the mean time. Did you wet or dry sand first? Did you use bed liner spray?
