sold my 6.4 and bought a 5.9 cummins,all the talk of GREAT mpg's is probably cause of the meter on the headliner which is a great cheerleader but when the trip was over and we filled her up she gave me 16 mpg's for 400 miles of I-5! my 6.4 did 17mpg but i really stayed out of it,the dodge, i had my foot in it especially up the grapevine,the true test will be when i tow the same trailer this spring .miss the beast but am fortunate to be able to drive another type of truck ,to the good life everyone!

 

I am not sure I could ever plant my butt into anything older than 2010 for ram... Its just such a downgrade in almost every way. Yah the cummins probably won't murder your wallet, but the seats/ride will kill your back, the trans will eat your savings, and the front end is going to try to kill you every 20k miles.

You will really notice the lack of power though once you get weight hooked up. The late model ram's do tow better than a 6.4, but the 12 and 24 valve motors just don't stack up.

 

well i just went the other way i had a 06 dodge 6 speed and just but a 6.4 with my first ever automatic. that probably has a big part of it but this 6.4 doesn't even come close to towing power or efficiency that my dodge had. i mean your kind of comparing apples to oranges cause my dodge was set up for working and this fords a Lexus on a 1 ton chassis.

 

6 spd is a bit different imho... You can't even class them in with the autos. And I would agree with you there JD, a 6 spd cummins is a working mans dream. They definitely make for towing monsters.
