1960 F100 Newbie

I have just bought this F100 and it will be my first build. I haven't actually picked it up yet because I am driving about 12 hours to get it and im trying to find time. But I am super pumped.

I want a good daily driver with some power when i want it.
The guy thinks it has a 332 in it but it is disassembled.

I am thinking a 360/C6 or maybe even a 390/C6. What do you think? I am open to all ideas not matter what the costs or complications. Also, will the rearend hold up with a swap. I am actually not even sure what will or will not fit in it. Any help/advice is extremely appreciated.

Not much wrong with a 360 or 390/ C6, but they are thirsty! My thoughts are if you want good fuel milage and less maintenance why not go with an EFI and overdrive transmission setup Plenty of info out there no mater which direction you chose. Begin with the end in mind, and have fun doing it. This being your first rebuild you will be learning all sorts of stuff.

Good luck in your quest!

Welcome to the Land of Mis-fit Toys. Looks like a nice solid truck. Many options for a transplant, I agree with Wally. The rear end if original should be a 9", 3.7:1 ratio. Easy to swap to another ratio and can handle the torque.

Alright thanks guys. I have worked on my grandpas 68 with a 390 and my neighbors that has a 360, that is why I was thinking about those two. I have never even seen a y block 292, which I believe was an option for a 1960. What are your opinions on that motor and the fordomatic trans?

Probably nothing on earth sounds better than a Y block with headers and straight pipes, but everyone always seems to want to ditch the 292.

I have heard that from a old timer that I go to church with but I have never had a chance to hear one. But I am intrigued with it since I don't hear a lot about it. It would help set my project apart. Unless I'm just be naive.

Maybe it has something to do with the firing order. 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2. As God intended. Same as flathead. Look for a four barrel intake, ECZ heads, some rams horn manifolds. See what you think.

At the start of my build, I thought I wanted a 390 or a 302. Then I heard a good running Y block. So, I decided to have my old Y block overhauled.

I rebuilt my 292 Y-Bock and love it. I agree it sounds great. As far as the Fordomatic, I don't have experience with it. The Y-Block does limit your transmission selection.

Well I finally found time this sat morning to actually go get this truck, any idea how much this truck is going to weigh and how long of a trailer that I will need?

Waldron what transmission do you have behind your 292?

A 16 foot car trailer should do the job just fine. As far as weight goes, I Cant imagine it would be any more than 4,000 pounds. Every truck we've ever hauled home with a Y block in it has had a T-98 4 Speed behind it.

Yup, mine has a T-98 4 Speed transmission. First gear is Granny gear. However, I added some horses to my engine (bigger valves, dual exhaust, 4 bbl Carb) and changed the rear ratio to 3.00 to 1 so I use the first gear as a real first gear and can cruise at 70 in 4th with no problem and pretty low engine RPM.

One of these days I am going to buy the modified bell housing from John Mummert and put a T5 5 speed in it.

I guess this is what I get for counting my chicks before they hatch. I contacted the seller of the truck to confirm the pickup time this Saturday and he told me someone just came and got it. I guess a guys word and agreement isn't what i was raised to know after all. Back to the classifieds and websearches i guess. hopefully i can find another 3rd gen f100 and continue this post/project soon. Thanks for your replies, it helped me get together a good plan of what i want.

Welcome to the "Orphan Years".
The 292c.i. Y-block was the Standard Engine for the F&M-100s starting in 1958.
Which was the Up-Grade from the 272c.i. Y-block that came Standard prior years.
The more one keeps it Factory, the More Value the Olde Girl will have, as there are fewer & fewer of them being left that way.
