OBD1 location a 1995 f250 with the 7.3 Powerstroke diesel

Hello, this is my first post on the forum, so please bear with me. I just bought a 1995 f-250 with the 7.3, no leaks at all and drove great and the test drive. A month later, truck wont start unless you put your foot on the throttle, then it stalls out with a check engine light. So I looked under the hood for the obd1 port, couldn't find it. Then I looked under the dash and I found the main part of the obd1, but i cant find the separate return piece. Where is it? Also, why is there an obd2 and obd1? Do they both work?

The 7.3 powerstroke obs trucks never came with obd1, all were obd2. You can't communicate with the pcm because for some reason Ford didn't program the pcm to read the codes, good news is that any dealer can program the obd2 so you can read codes.

does that mean the obd1 does nothing? Will an obd2 work right away?

No obd1, and maybe on the obd2 if previous owner had the pcm program updated, if not your going to have to take it to the dealer to get the obd2 to communicate.

welcome to FTE.
i am not positive, but i think what you are calling the OBD-1 connector is actually the door chime connector.

my '95 had the obd1 plug on the driver side fender. all of the '95 powerstroke trucks I have worked on had the obd1 plug on the driver side fender. I never tried to plug in to it and never inquired as to why ford put it there. they all also had the obd11 plug inside the cab on the passenger side. as also stated the communication channel has to be opened for it to work.

We have two '95s, and neither one has the OBD-I connector under the hood. There were a lot of changes mid-year '95; from 7-rib to 8-rib serp pulleys, from an external radiator overflow to an internal degas bottle, etc. I wonder if they discontinued the OBD-I connector with one of those mid-year changes.

My 95 does not have an OBD I connector under the hood. My truck was produced November 94.

^^^^ Does it have an overflow and a radiator cap, or a degas bottle with a pressure cap? 7-rib or 8-rib pulleys? Not related, of course, but they MIGHT have made those engineering changes at the same time. One of our trucks was built Jan '95 and it has all the "late" '95 stuff.

Ive never seen an obd1 connector on 94.5-97 obs trucks not even the california emision ones. Might be one of those U-haul specials?

yup, pretty sure. mainly because like is shown in Jose's post above, the EEC-IV, or pre OBD II link is under the hood near the driver side hood hinge, not under the dash.
and the connector under the dash he has plugged into the code reader looks just like the door chime connector in the 87 to 91 trucks.
