Spool looks good. It has a DLC outer finish, pretty hard to mess that up.

Look closely' those two grooves "A" shouldn't be there. The whole area "B" should be smooth I think. The pic makes them look like 3or4 thou but it wasn't quite that bad. You could feel it with a fingernail but couldn't really "hang" a nail on it. I hear ya on the work, I'm a little toasty too. Am I wrong on this? That groove supposed to be there?

Maybe. I don't have enough experience with these to confidently make the call. I do know I've spent a couple weekends jacking with this after I put it back together. I can spend the coin on injectors I guess but I don't want to change them out only to find the turbo is stuck or something easy I missed.

Anybody else had their spools out? Did you see these grooves on yours?

That spool looks fine n dandy. The area you marked "B" is showing up really well in your pic.

This is a blurry pic I took some time back.

Thanks Josh. I also showed the pics to a coworker who does a lot of hydraulic stuff (not 6.0 savvy) and after looking at it a bit he pointed out IF the grooves were caused by wear the smaller groves inside the area I suspected was worn would go lengthways like the spools move, not radial like in the picture. Makes sense.

Well, I'll chase down my air leak this weekend and scratch my head some more. I'm starting to suspect something turbo related.

Is your pic a before or after? Usually, at least from what I've seen, is the spools have a yellowish "tarnish" that really shows up when starting to polish with fine grit sandpaper.

When I worked for Deere, it was very common to polish hydraulic spools on 644H Loaders, so nothing really new there.

Although I haven't really polished injector spools lately, I opt to tell individuals to replace the offending injector.

That was a before pic. I had just pulled it, sprayed it with WD40 and wiped it off. The truck had a terrible cold idle and one contribution code on #7. No codes yet in 150mi of running. Just low power at low rpm.

I (of course) want to say yes. I'm going back in to investigate. Found this

I picked up a hiss when doing the full throttle fuel pressure test. (58psi) I don't think it's been that way the whole time though.

Here's a pic of mine I did a couple months ago. It's not much worse than yours if any.

After thinking about it some more (I'm starting to second guess myself) I was aware when I started that one side of the spool is longer than the other and the orientation was important. I paid close attention to how the first one came apart and then did the other 7 the same way as far as orienting the coils/harness and body. BUT, if I got the first one wrong, I did the rest the same way, kinda working in production line style. Looks like I'll pull one and see if it's right compare to the write-up in the Tech folder. I have no idea why that would matter but I'm sure it does.

Anybody use Gates CAC boots? A nearby O'Riley's has one on hand (Not cheap). I would like to get this thing fixed this weekend.
