Do you have a stalling problem at 2-3 mph?

Remove the VSS sensor on top of the rear diff housing. Clean the grime and metal shavings from it, clean the terminals on the plug side, and reinstall.

That may take care of it for a while. If you find large chunks of metal stuck to the VSS you may have damage to the rear diff. The VSS is a magnet that senses a tone ring attached to the ring gear. The tone ring has one or more magnets on it, when they pass by each other the magnetic field is dirupted and sends a signal to the PSOM ( speedometer ) and the ABS controller, as well as the PCM, for Cruise control
and other engine funtions. The VSS can mess up drivability and safety if not fixed.

Good luck,

Ford has had a history of the Programmable Speedometer Odometer Module (PSOM) going bad. I had one ordered from Ford (under warranty thankfully) and installed. They "burn" in from the factory to match your mileage and they program it to match your tire size.

This site has a thread or two that explains how to electronically adjust that odometer if you get one out of salvage or auction (steve83 authored).

Godd luck.

It sounds like your speedometer (PSOM) is dying. Read this thread. Ford quit using them because of problems, but the one I'm using has worked flawlessly for ~5 years, and it sat in a junkyard for at least a year before I got it.

BTW There are no magnets on the tone ring.
