Flat towing F-150 behind a motorhome

Can the 2015 4x2 be flat towed (all wheels down) behind a motorhome?

Anyone done it?

I think so. Saw a really big class A motor home the other day pulling a RC 2015 F-150. Kind of caught my attention.

As per the manual, the 2WD models can't be flat towed at all. The 4WD models can shift the transfer case into neutral which prevents transmission damage. You'd have to remove the driveshaft of a 2WD model to achieve the same effect.

There is a drive shaft disconnect device available that will serve the same purpose as removing the shaft. An RV accessory store should have the info.

Or you can tow a tralier with your F150 in it? But would be a lot more trouble.
Better to get the drive shaft disconnect device.
Best of luck,
Scott

Or get a manual shift 4x4.

That's no longer an option on the '15s, ESOF is the only system they offer. It has a neutral tow mode though, so any 4WD would work without modification.

How do you put the transfer case in neutral? I drove a 2015 Lariat yesterday and the 4wd had: 2wd, 4A, 4H, 4L
And is 4A like AWD where it turns on 4wd when slip is detected?

It's not an obvious setting, you have to

1. Put the ignition in the on position, but
do not start the engine. If your vehicle
has an ignition key, turn the key to on.
If your vehicle has intelligent access,
press the engine START/STOP button
once without pressing the brake pedal.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3. Rotate the four-wheel drive switch to
2H.
4. Shift the transmission to position N.
5. Rotate the four-wheel drive switch
from 2H to 4L and back to 2H five
times within seven seconds.

Yup, you got it. Keeps the front hubs engaged so the transfer case can apply power instantly when the rears slip.

Thanks. My current truck (2001 Ram 2500) is all manual - all this electronic stuff is...screwy.

I read through that, and I keep thinking, why, oh why do they encode these weird things through ignition switches, or 4WD controls, etc.?

I mean, how hard would it be to put something in the settings menu in the center console? Something like "Enable flat towing"; "OK"?

sheesh.

Perhaps it has to do with how hazardous this could be with someone who doesn't know what he's doing. Accidentally check that menu setting and watch your truck roll away even though you shifted to park.

Seriously.....even the newer Ram's have a button that says "Neutral" right there at the 4x4 selector ****.

Stand on one leg, turning in a counter-clockwise direction with the driver's door open and tailgate down, reach in and turn key 3 times on and 2 times off; now spin clockwise and turn key 2 times on and 2 times off; place foot on brake while hopping on other leg. Start the truck and shut-off within 3 seconds. Repeat twice and the transfer case will now be in Neutral.

New to the forum and from what I can gather from everyone's posts on flat towing a 2011 F150 4X4 with manual shift transfer case is:
1. Shift transfer case to neutral
2. Insert ignition key but do not turn it on at all to unlock steering
3. Tow truck

Do I have this correct?

Your thoughts, corrections, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Current plan is getting truck this Thursday and having it outfitted 2/10/17 with Blue Ox base plate w/brake system and lights wiring. Recently acquired a class A RV and plan on using the 2011 as my toad and hauling my motorcycle in the bed. If I'm missing something on the flat towing please advise. Thank you.

Your question might be better in the section for 2011 trucks. I'm sure someone here will know but since this is for the 15+ it may take a while for an answer.
