stuck on axle uninstall
hello,1997 ford f250 manual hubs.i snapped the right front axle the other night and went to tear down to see how much damage before i order parts. i get capliper off, front of hub off and then there is a spanner nut(which i have never seen besides on a washing mahine)which is fine as i found the right socket at the parts store.however in front of the spanner nut there is i believe a another nut with only one notch. we cant find that nut in the parts book?? anyone know this part? i attached a pic....

I believe you're mistaking the spindle itself for a nut. That's the only thing in there with one notch in it. If you look closely, you'll notice threads on the outside of it. These male threads engage the female threads on the spanner nut.
The reason it has a notch in it is to engage the lockwasher that prevents your bearing nut from backing out.

Just to be sure, does the socket you picked up have 4 tabs sticking out of the front? Those 4 tabs line up with the 4 notches in the nut. When you get the nut removed, there will be a washer with holes in it . One of the holes should be lined up with a pin on the second nut. You can see the 4 tabs on the washer sticking up in your pic. That washer should slide off the spindle, then use the socket to remove the inner nut. The wheel hub should then slide off of the spindle. The one notch you see in the pic, is for the locking washer that sits in between the 2 nuts.
It looks from the pic, that the outer part of the locking hub is still in the wheel hub, but I can't tell for sure. The ends of the snap ring look to be at the 5 oclock position in the end of the wheel hub. Did you remove a snap ring that goes into the wheel hub to get the locking hub out?

Actually, the piece you drew the arrow on is your spindle. That's what the spanner nut with the four notches in it actually screws onto. The bearings ride on the spindle, etc. You won't be able to loosen that, because it's not a nut. You just need to loosen the spanner nut with the four notches in it.
Sorry, I tried to explain that in my first reply, but I don't think I was clear.
