On the road.. help - high egt low power

Left Houston with the travel trailer (6000#). And all was well. Doing 60 to 65 in overdrive EGT's around 800. about 1 1/2 hrs into the drive, egts started climbing and power is dropping off. i unplugged the ebpv and wired it open, no change. Checked clamps, thinking boost leak?

If you have any mods please list them

I would be looking for boost leaks and pre turbo exhaust leaks

Check the air filter to see if it did not collapse, boost leak for sure or ? exaust bent?

I can hear the turbo spool so leaning to boost leak. Problem seems to come and go. Honestly beginning to wonder if it is just the wind.

That's very possible. If boost is staying up and it's pulling good I'd just drive by egt's

Thanks guys. Air filter is ok, don't see damage to exhaust. I have 6637 filter and 3" dp and TS 6 position chip. Sometimes I can run 63ish in OD 700-800 EGT on flats and 900-1000 climbing small hills, overpasses and such. Other times can't hold 60 at all EGT's pushing 1100 plus. When that happens, I can drop OD and keep EGT's under 1000 and run 60 ish. The trailer is only about 6k#. It is a travel trailer, so it catches alot of wind, and we did drive right through the meeting of 2 storm fronts. This is my first diesel, first travel trailer, and first trip. Am I just expecting too much from a 20 yr old truck and winds?

No, your not expecting to much. The wind really effects anybody with a trailer. Its like pulling a parachute thru the wind.

So you think its driving conditions, or should I be chasing a mechanical issue. I can't really pressure the system to look fir a boost leak. I don't have a boost gauge on it, but I certainly hear the turbo spinning.

If you're still moving I'd personally run it until you actually have a minute to go over it abs actually look at it. Fixing/diagnosing things on the side of the road sucks.

I pulled a 7,500# travel trailer (30' long) through that same area as you about a month and a half ago and was also experiencing high EGTs.

I could actually feel the wind blowing against the truck though. Eventually gave it to trying to hold speed and dropped down to like 45 MPH, OD off, and 1,150* EGTs.

Was like that for an hour, winds dropped, and I picked back up. Have pretty much the same mods as you.

Thanks for the replies. gonna sit tight in Abilene till the roads clear a bit. 12k# of truck and trailer + rwd with open diff + ice + native Houstonian = 10mph white kuckle driving. haha

Guy here at the camp ground suggested that the high winds and trailer draft may be creating high air pressure area near the tailpipe, creating back pressure on the exhaust. Seems plausible, but kinda reaching. Thoughts?

I really don't think that is possible.

When I went for my new to me camper on my way home I fought a terrible headwind. Man it makes a difference! 14 normally with the old box. That trip was 9-10 mpg and thrashing the ol guy

Heck I've not even started worrying abou mpg yet..lol. I just would like to be able to hold 60mph in OD at fairly flat ground. How much difference would a 4" exhaust, maybe with a dump on each side, make in power/EGT's
