Help needed for removing oil pan

Hello and good morning.

I have a 1987 XLT Lariat with a 302 and AOD 2WD standard cab and 8' bed.

Amazingly, I have to "jack up the engine" to remove the oil pan. The only jacking point is the Harmonic Balancer but there is a Cross Member with metal tubing which prevents me from placing a jack directly under the Harmonic Balancer but only about 1/2".

All replies are welcomed.

Welcome to FTE and the Missouri chapter. Do you have a engine hoist? Safer way to lift it IMO. Maybe rent one?

Can you bridge the space? Jack stand on one side of the HB and jack on the other? And bridge the gap with a piece of angle iron and get more than 1/2" on it?

That 1/2" worth of suport sounds like a great way to get hurt or drop the engine.

Engine hoist is the best method. I wouldn't lift on the damper, too many bad things to happen. Maybe take both motor mounts loose, pry it up on the motor mount and block it up on each side until you get it high enough.

I agree with Rich. You really need to find a lift to bring the engine up enough from above. By the time you rig up a stable support to jack it from below, you've lost a lot of room to work.

You are correct in that I have attempted to jack the engine up and it fell to the side. I do not have a "cherry picker." I do have a floor jack, bottle jack and the factory jack. I spoke with the local Ford Dealer and I was told to remove the oil pick up inside the oil pan.

The cross member prevents me from getting a good bite on the HB.

Thank you!

Wales

Where are you at Wales? If you're close by maybe one of us could lend you a hand.

Yes there Mr Outlaw Josie "Wales"... sorry I had to. Where do you park your tool box in Mo? N, S, E or Westerly?

And stop by here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...er-thread.html

Jacking it up using small shims of wood or piece of 2x4 between the motor mount and motor or eng perches sound safer.

That's a bit far out for me to lend a hand.

may i ask why you are pulling the pan?
but like rich says, in your situation the safest way to do it is unbolt the mounts.. and maybe even the fan shroud and any thing else not able to move that far.. the take your floor jack with some blocks wider than the pan jack up till ya hit the floorboard somewhere then slip some blocks tight in between the mounts and the stands .. if you can cut a wedge and drive it in to hold at the highest point.. then drop the pan ..as far as it will go then reach in.. to either unbolt the pickup tube or the complete oil pump.. let it fall into the pan then remove the pan.. without actually being there to see what exactly you have to deal with that is all i can think of to say

I will use your procedure which is considerably safer.

Thank you all for helping me!!!!!
