Transmission swap ZF 5S-42, 47
I can't seem to find a thread for this simple question - I have a late '94 7.3 F350 dually crewcab, 2 WD, original ZF 5S-42 needing rebuilding. I have found a low mileage ZF 5S-47, this is a stronger transmission, in good shape.
So the simple question: Is this a straightforward "bolt in" installation into my truck?
Has anyone done this conversion, what do I need to know?
Thanks in advance for the advice.....

I am pretty sure they are 100% interchangable. They both have the same engine bolt pattern. The t-cases are interchangable also.. There may be a slight difference in case length, but I am pretty sure they are the same.... The only problem I have seen people taalk about is the shifter rod length for the t-case, but thats when swapping an auto for the manual trans.

And MOST like the higher 1st/revers that the s42 has and Dislike the low 1st and revers of the s47

I put it in myself. Pulled the E4OD, and swapped in the S5-42. Had the ZF already laying in the garage. Bought it 100% redone for a 460. Went to the junk yard, and pulled a ZF out of an IDI. I just swapped the guts over from the two, and bolted her up.
I did have to make a custom cross member as I threw a 4x4 tail housing with transfer case on it. The truck does have 3.55 in it though. I'll get around to putting some 4.10's in it when I finish the 4x4 conversion.

Different gear ratios. The 42 is for someone who just drives their truck, the 47 is for those who work it
