Transmission swap ZF 5S-42, 47

I can't seem to find a thread for this simple question - I have a late '94 7.3 F350 dually crewcab, 2 WD, original ZF 5S-42 needing rebuilding. I have found a low mileage ZF 5S-47, this is a stronger transmission, in good shape.

So the simple question: Is this a straightforward "bolt in" installation into my truck?

Has anyone done this conversion, what do I need to know?

Thanks in advance for the advice.....

I am pretty sure they are 100% interchangable. They both have the same engine bolt pattern. The t-cases are interchangable also.. There may be a slight difference in case length, but I am pretty sure they are the same.... The only problem I have seen people taalk about is the shifter rod length for the t-case, but thats when swapping an auto for the manual trans.

If the S47 is a 2 wheel drive version, it is a direct swap. The tail shafts are different between a 2wd and 4wd versions.

Is there something wrong with your S42? The strength difference is marginal.
And MOST like the higher 1st/revers that the s42 has and Dislike the low 1st and revers of the s47

I put a S5-42 in my 1996,which would have featured the S5-47 had it been manual from the factory. I don't think you'll have any problems swapping it in.

I like the higher 1st gear, but it would be a bit nice to have a slightly lower reverse for backing trailers into place.

I really dislike the way the 42 is geared when the truck has a load the 47 works better to me

First impression with my 4 door vs my ex cab, same gear(4.10,) same tire, I like the 42's gear spread better unloaded, but the 47's reverse is much better for navigating a trailer. First is overkill in the 47, even with 315's.

I put it in myself. Pulled the E4OD, and swapped in the S5-42. Had the ZF already laying in the garage. Bought it 100% redone for a 460. Went to the junk yard, and pulled a ZF out of an IDI. I just swapped the guts over from the two, and bolted her up.

I did have to make a custom cross member as I threw a 4x4 tail housing with transfer case on it. The truck does have 3.55 in it though. I'll get around to putting some 4.10's in it when I finish the 4x4 conversion.

I just finished the E4od to Zf5 conversion on my 97 CCLB 4x4. The shop who rebuilt the ZF for me said either would work. Just a difference in driveshaft connection.

Different gear ratios. The 42 is for someone who just drives their truck, the 47 is for those who work it

Thanks, man. We definitely got the right one for us then. Our truck is a barn queen.
