1970 F-100

I just got my grandfather's 1970 F-100, as a Chevy guy I'm sure I will have lots of questions. It's got a 360 and an auto trans. It has the "Ranger" package. The plan is to get it running and make sure the motor is ok before going to the trans. It was parked in about 1999 because it would only shift 1-2. It would go to third occasionally, but not reliably. I will post pics soon.

Good Luck

Sounds like it's going to need some TLC.

flynlow8740 Welcome to and the Bumpside Forum.

I have changed my thinking over the years on these trucks. After resting for 15 years most everything drivetrain related is shot, cracked, rotted, busted......whatever. Before starting try to get a grip on "It was my grandfathers truck and I have to..." 1- keep it as original as possible, 2- modernise it, 3- something in between. Get a plan started and work the plan.

Start with cleaning and working with the sheet metal while you try to figure out the drive train. That is where I have made my biggest changes. When these trucks were built gas was at $.30 a gallon, a heck of a lot of dirt roads, with 45-50 mph truck speed limits, so there was no thoughts on fuel economy back then.

I think I would entertain a 2010 or newer power train with as much mpgs as I could get out. Some guys like the diesel conversion, I might consider an EcoBoost. The option window is wide open without restrictions in most states.

Don't rush in, you have the rest of your life to finish the truck.

If I did any swapping I would probably go diesel. I'm thinking for now just get it drivable and safe. The first mods it gets will probably be power brakes and maybe convert the front to disc.

Sounds like John's lost the faith. Surprised I didn't see an SBC conversion in the recommendation!

Don't be afraid of making power out of an old FE. You can get some serious numbers out of a junkyard build, or you can do the high performance build with modern parts. No, it won't get good mileage, but it can rock.

There are some "dirty" pics of the truck. I have washed it, but it was too dark to get any pics. As a side note, the Massey-Ferguson tractor in the background was also bought new by my grandad, if anyone here is into tractors.

Nice pickup, 2wd ones are rare as hens teeth around here.

Welcome to the F100 club! You will love it and forget about that Chevy once you drive it. Great looking truck can't wait to see what you do with it. Looks like mine did when I got it

The data plate says "F-108". What does that mean?

F10 is an F100, 2WD. I have doubts about the "8". Take a picture and post it.

Whatever is done, I would first start with the brakes and suspension. These trucks have a nasty habit of developing brake problems (failure), if it's been sitting up for a long time, and then starts seeing use again.

Getting the engine running really well doesn't mean too much if you can't (controllably) bring the truck to a stop. --brakes first then the engine.

It currently has no brakes whatsoever, so that's definitely on the to do list. I just want to get it running and make sure the engine is ok. Then I can diagnose shifting/trans problems running it on jack stands. (Taking proper safety steps before doing so).
