11500 lb GVWR Registration In Ontario Canada
So I've been reading lots and lots of different views, never getting the same answer from different sources. The Ministry web site is very confusing and doesn't actually, from what I can tell, give accurate information on registering a truck at 11500 GVWR.
Apparently the Ministry gals in my town don't know the rules as well. The Dealer went there today to register my new 16' F350 CC SRW. The poor guy they sent to register it was sent away from the Ministry saying a CVOR was required. Well that's just not true. The truck is for personal use only and I couldn't get a CVOR even if I wanted to, as I don't have my own business to attach it to. So a couple of phone calls later, and the guy is on his way back to have my truck registered at 11500.
Now grey area. Maybe someone can explain? I still can't find any definitive answer as to whether or not I "require" a Yellow sticker. Since the truck is personal use only. I don't see the need for one. and there is currently no yellow sticker on the truck. Which works for me, as I really don't want to have to get one for all of my trailers, like a 4x10 utility trailer, 16' boat trailer etc. Only one I'm not sure about is my 16' flatbed, with dual 3500lb axles. When I purchased the trailer the dealer put a yellow sticker on it.
I haven't seen any posts on pricing for the 11500 GVWR, but I can tell you its not cheap. Registered from today, Oct 1, 2015 to Nov 2016 it cost me $739.65 You can re-register the truck every quarter if you choose with a different weight. So say you only tow heavy in the summer, you can lower the GVWR for the rest of the year, which will be a lot cheaper.
Thought I'd post this as I haven't been able to find any pricing on registration. So hopefully it will help others in the Ottawa, Ontario, Canada area. And hopefully get some education on the subject.
I know threads can get off topic, but hopefully this can stay a thread specifically for Ontario.

ouch. here in Alberta, I registered my '04 Sierra 3500 at 4000kg for about $170/year [have it for the flatbed surface area, not the weight capacity]. It was maybe $50 or so more for the full capacity. It's registered as a commercial vehicle, but a personal vehicle probably wouldn't be much cheaper.

look within the guide lines for exclusions. for example, in the US NY, you must register a truck over 5500lbs empty weight as commercial.......unless you meet one of the exclusions.....the easist to meet is to put a fiberglass camper type shell on the bed and install permenet seat fitings...the camper shell type of top has to have windows.
this will get you passenger plates.
I personally do have the top installed, since in NYC, you cant park a commercial class truck in a resisdence unless you have passenger plates...and if you have paasenger plates with out the top then you get a ticket for incorrect registration class as well as parking a commercial class vehicle in a residentual area.
Some folks mistakenly submit to DMV that they meet the exclusion and stae they have a camper type shell with windows along with perm installed seat fittings....but what they do in error is use one of those flat bed covers thinking the exclusion only requires you to cover the bed.
Also, if you register using an exclusion and get pass plates...you can get an out of registration class ticket if you are stopped and there are tools in your truck bed.
WHen I registered my f-350 dually, the DVM staff told me I could not register passenger becuase my truck had 6 wheels and by NY state definition is a truck, as well as being over the 5500lb weight limit by 1500lbs. I showed them the exclusion and said as long as I meet the exclusion I can register a tractor trailer as a passenger vehicle so long as their is a campe shell with windows and perm seat fittings on the back.
they called the manager who argreed and they issued my registration for passenger plates.

Long and short of it re: the yellow sticker.....in order to to tow any trailer except a travel trailer or fifth wheel camper.....you require a yearly inspection for both the truck and the trailer in Ontario. Which is..you guessed it your yellow safety sticker, whether truck is commercial or personal use. Also I believe there is a weight requirement for the sticker as well....anything over 4500 kg GRVW....which I know my 2008 f250 4x4 with the diesel is hmmm 4568 kg seems to ring a bell. Not sure on what the gas engine f250's weight in at...but if you're in a diesel crew cab 4x4 like i am you're just over.
