Bw 4460 lifespan
I've come to the conclusion that my 4x4 is not working due to tcase failure. So now I'm
faced with buying a rebuild for around 1200 or a salvage for 400. My pickups got 127000 miles. Any suggestions? Money is tight as usuall so would anybody warn against salvage? And how many trouble free miles do the tcase average. Thanks !

What is it doing to make you suspect there is a tcase problem? Edit: just read previous thread, i would pull the case apart fist to see if there are obvious issues, my local transmission shop pulld the transfer case out of my 97, tore it apart, fixed the issue (broken snap ring), reassembled and reinstalled it for $400. Both my trucks have the bw4406 (I assume the 4460 is a typo) and I only had to have a snap ring replaced in one. Both have 200k miles on the clock and both work flawlessly.

According to my chiltons, it's best to stay away from the innards of the tcase but if the used one doesn't work out I'll be looking into a rebuild kit. If I can take the info from partmyride.com at face value the new one at 62,000 ish miles should be in better shape than the previous one seeing as how it took a crap at 100,00 miles. And for 220 bucks, I'll roll the dice.
