No, those are 289/302/351W heads. Valves are in a straight row.*

Heads for a 400 will look like:

http://image.hotrod.com/f/31603143+w..._valve_job.jpg

Note how the valve covers are rectangular on the 400, and trapazoidal on the 289 type head ( /==\ looking)

Also look a the valve cover bolts:

2 bolts: 239/256/272/292/312 (produced from 1954 to 1964) (easy to tell)
5 bolts: 332/352/360/361/390/391/406/410/427/428 (FE engine) (as said before, Helen Keller can id these as the head does not include the full valve cover sealing area)

6 bolts: 221/260/289/302/351W (See above)

7 bolts: 429/460 (canted valves, but much too large for the 400)

8 bolts: 351C/351M/400 (count all on one hand, 3 on the other)

*see post 3. They will bolt up, but getting them to work is not worth the effort and would require a custom fabricated intake along with other work. All along with smaller valves to boot. So "fit"? Yes. "Work" Not easily or practically.

Yes, they will fit. All Ford "small block" cylinder heads interchange, but it also requires the proper intake manifold and piston configuration.

Personally I would not swap an inline head onto a 400. You could likely port your 400 heads to equal that flow. I'd guarantee a professional could! I also do not know of any intakes specifically to run inline heads on a 400. Most specialized intakes are to run the canted valve heads on a 302 or 351W.

Derbydad, those are open chamber 4V heads.

To the OP, your choices are Australian Ford iron heads or aluminum ones, Edelbrock, ProComp (Speedmaster) and there are Australian aluminum heads that are really nice. Problem is they cost money.

Tim Meyer (TMI) can help you out with this, just not the money part!.

All Cleveland heads look basically the same from the top. That tells you nothing. Usually they are stock heads for 351M/400.

He has Pairs of Aussie 351C Iron heads assembled for like $700, I think the chambers are like 60cc though...

Those aussie heads are awesome but, check your compression ratio. I'd stay 9.5:1 Iron and 10.5:1 Aluminum to be on the safe side.. Detonation will depend on cam choice/ timing/ fuel availability/ elevation also.

It takes but a few minutes of searching to find Tim Meyer's web site and look through his catalog. While there you will find he has pistons for putting those heads on a 400 and making it work on pump gas. Last time I checked he was out of them but they are a regular production item.

I'm tempted to do this on my '77. It has less than 10K on a rebuild so bores should be OK. Actually he has also pistons that work and make squish with my stock heads and those would be the ones I'd use.

Aussie heads will use any 351M/400 intake.

All of the 335 engine heads are the same casting, 351C, 351M and 400.
The difference is the deck height between 400/351M and 351C, you only need a spacer if you put a 351 Cleveland intake manifold onto the 351M/400 block.
