Dually conversion

Hello, I am in the market for a dually for towing our shop trailer but short on money for a newer truck. I have a 99 super duty, extended cab, short bed with a 7.3 that still runs great. I was wondering if I can convert this to a dual rear wheel to get by. The reason is the the GVW of the trailer with the GVW of a one ton will put me over and require a CDL to tow. I have heavier suspension on there now if that matters and it is also a 4 x 4 as well. Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

As far as the legality of it, I have to say you know more about it than I do. The dually rear is a Dana80 which is different then Sterling the SRW trucks have.

Here is a company that makes the kits for it. Not sure on pricing, I guess you have to call.

http://www.arrowcraft.com/products.php#kits

Dana 80 drw axle is wider, then the 10.5 or 10.25 found in the srw 250 or 350. The way i did the conversion was found a D80, had to have the rear drive shaft shortened ( the D80 has a longer pinion shaft and case) added factory spacers to the front. thats about all that it takes. bought a new bed.

I'll make a more or less obvious point: the gear ratio in the rear will have to match the front since you have 4x4.

Know a guy that didn't think about it before he swapped rear ends. Thank goodness he tested 4x4 from a dead stop the first time.

I take it that this is the place to purchase the wheel kits? Thanks for the quote from the other site. I guess that I need to look for the rear end first, the wheels are easy to find. I can shorten the driveshaft myself since owning a weld shop, I have others bring me theirs all the time.

I realize that the ratio must match. I called the dealership to ask if the frame on the 250 to the 305 was the same width and if the length of the spring were also the same length and was told that he can't research that far back. I can't see the frames being different in regard to the body parts. If there is any others that can chime in about this, thanks. I am positive this can be done but I would like to narrow down the technical stuff before diving in and ordering parts.

The frames are the same. The spring ratings and the rear axle changes with DRW. You can run your SRW axle with the arrowcraft spacers and either add dually fenders to your bed or run a flatbed/service body/etc.
