Spewing oil

While I'm waiting to be towed, any guesses?

The truck was running great up Cabbage Hill outside of Pendleton Oregon. Then a lot of smoke started coming out behind me and I pulled to the side. Under the hood I found a lot of oil shooting straight up from this area where I'm pointing.

What could have caused this?

Most likely a blown high pressure oil line. But of course without being there it's only a guess. Maybe an oring from a high pressure oil line fitting.

Your guess is the most entertaining thing that's happened in the last 2 1/2 hours of sitting here :-)

It looks to be too far forward to be a turbo pedestal o-ring or EBPV valve, so high pressure oil line, or o-ring on one of the oil rail plugs are about the only things it could be.

You're sure its oil, and not fuel? The fuel line right in that area has been known to wear through, at the little line clamp holding it down, right about where your finger is, down in the valley, just ahead of the right side spider to plenum joint.

Looks more like diesel too, unless you have recently done an oil change and the detergents haven't had time to do their thing.

I'm voting with the schleppster, looks like a blown hpo hose. If she's down a couple quarts you'll know. Spew is the right word for when they let go! Pressure washed the valley boot on that side. Also goes to show how much oil is -not- just sitting around in the HPOP reservoir, that stuff is moving.

Are they the originals? New ones are better design with covering on the ss braid, not just loom. Make sure ya get those not NOS without it.

Glad it happened in a good place and a good time.

I have recently changed the oil

A mechanic stopped by last night and confirmed high pressure oil line.

On the roadside I added a gallon of oil to get to the fill line so I could drive the 200 yards to a safe place for loading onto a trailer. After that, it took another gallon just to get oil on the stick again!

can change that line in about 10 minutes if you have a router bit changing wrench. Works just like the pros wrench for popping the fitting off. Then plug, plug the new one and away ya go. Mechanic didn't bring one??????? What??

Actually since you didn't spot that , I can guess you havn't a clue whats up. So if you plan on fixing that. DO NOT UNDO THE TWO FITTINGS ON THE HPOP THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE LINES ATTACH TOO. They do not come out without destroying them. The lines actually pop off of those so they stay. Many people look at that and think it just unscrews to come off. It does not. The tool I speak of slides in behind the little plastic thingy just behind the fitting and pushes it towards the hpop. This holds the lock inside the fitting, and you just pull the hose out. It will have a male end on it. Same on head. Break that fitting, and your buying a new hpop. There is a repair fitting with longer threads, but its a hoaky fix.

Do yourself a favor and replace BOTH of the high pressure oil lines while you're at it.

Both lines at Ford $400 w tax, NAPA about $200 + tax.
My OCD says 'Ford" but my wallet says "NAPA".
